k2 speado/techo restoration questions
« on: April 23, 2006, 06:01:11 AM »
hya guys, here we go, kaceyf2 has a k2 restoration project and we are all gonna get bugged!
No, i will TRY not to ha ha, but this restoration is a little different, My son, (who has cerebal palsey) had been bugging me for months and months that he was not only bored witless (his best mates have just got jobs) but that it was about time that he learned something usefull ,and "Could we do a restoration together and you could teach me Karl" ( he calls me that! "dad" is a bit formal!)
" I promise I will work hard!" " i promise we will go Halfs on whats needed!" etc etc on and on....
Till, i was beaten, and we went out and got a 1973 K2
I told him about the big comunity of like minded individuals, that were allways there to help and give advice (YEP , THATS YOU LOT!) and he seemed well impressed........

He has total faith in my mechanical ability, and knows full well how many years i have put into it!
I was feeling a tad proud of this the other day, when, (dont you know it) here it comes; We came to the speedo and tacho restoration issue/s............

I have one book, that catergorically states the faces for K2 in the UK should be BLACK..............
BUT, after two years of allways looking on ebay at clocks when they come up, I have NEVER seen a pair of black faced ones on ebay.co.uk!!

They are all either green or blue!  did they all FADE? not the green ones for definate, because we had an old one that we took apart, and under the two screws on the face it was still green, and had never been disturbed before, so that clock certainly had not faded!

Anyways, I feel a tad stupid to say the least, should k2 clock faces be black, and if so, are these black faces that come up for sale any good, moreover HOW do I get into the clock to change them ,and worse still do i have to remove the delicate looking needle to get the new face on??
I have never needed to "go inside" clocks before, and the last thing i want to do is pass on the easily learnt skill of "f**** ing it up" to my lad!   "DAD" wants to appear competent at  the very least when restoring k2's delicate old clocks............I should have said , we are going for concourse here!

all advice, hints, tips, help, will just go to show my lad how good you all are!!!
Thanks in advance,
kaceyf2

In my own experience...
It wasn't a Previous Owner who didnt know what he was doing that messed up your bike, it was The Previous owners mate who THOUGHT that HE did.

Kaceyf2,

According to Mark Haycock's book, effective with the K1 model, in addition to changing the cases from acrylic to metal, the instrument faces were changed from black to to dark green "to reduce reflections." Hope this helps. Good luck on the restoration.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Bob,

Where does one get Mark Haycock's book?  It seems to have all
sorts of useful data.

I have two brand new ones on my K2 that came out of a Honda box and I can assure you they are dark green.
