wiring diagram needed
« on: December 20, 2010, 12:47:23 PM »
I need to do a bit of diagnostic work and wiring up of a bike that was partially pulled apart 20 years ago.  Is there a wiring diagram that is better (easier to follow ) than others.  I have ordered that book from a bloke on this site a few days ago but I reckon it's going to take a couple of weeks or more to get here and I would love to make a start now.
Thanks  Scott

Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Except remember to add the clutch sw and the diode on later models, you know that little diode is a tricky rascal!

mate that is excellent thank you
I may allready be able to spot a potential problem
My starter solenoid is not working on the bike.  On the work bench no worries and I'm getting power to it when pressing the starter button,  but I am missing the horn maybe thats a problem as I see it is linked or I might just be tripping and talking rubbish.  Time will tell, but thanks again dude

Hey Scott, what model , year is your machine, there is a few changes over the years, especially ones with the clutch safety switch . It really is very simple once you understand how each circuit is laid out. When I start with an unknown bike with some ghost in the machine, I find most probs are caused by corrosion, first, and PO mods second, especially if it had one of the very popular large touring fairings that required mods in the headlight  and signal area.
I use a very simple test light and two jumper wires, one for hot and one for ground, just bypass the harness and connectors, then it is a process of elimination. I clean the connectors with a very small file and a can of carbon tet (contact cleaner). The bar switches will be unbelievably gunky, careful with the cleaning here. I have two horn button springs hiding out somewhere in my shop!
Here is a K8 that we gave up on and built a totally new harness, adding modern electrics.
  Enjoy!
