Looking forward to hearing the dates!

Hey Brad!

Yea, we're all waiting on firm dates.  I'm guessing late July early August but that's just a guess!  What part of Northern Michigan are ya from?  Are ya a Yooper or a Troll?  The very first post on this thread has routes and photo ops.  Feel free to contribute whatever you think is beneficial!

The Central/Ohio thread looks to be firming up dates, maybe the end of May, 1st of June into PA, so I'm thinking if it holds, it would be earlier than July/August when it crossed into Canada. I'm sure there will be a lot of changes before it's set in stone, though.

I'm a Yooper, and actually live about a 1/2 mile from Da Yoopers Tourist trap in Ishpeming. Schedule and equipment permitting I'd love to ride along through the Keweenaw and maybe some more.

Cool!! Do you know RatRacer?  He hails from Marquette and will be our "UP Tour Guide".  Maybe you can touch base with him to see if there is opportunity to buddy up through any of the segments RR is planning to ride solo.

Glad to have another Yooper on the ride!

Surprisingly, no, I don't. But I do know of another cat in Marquette with a 72 CB500 w/ 550 transplant who might be down for a ride too.

OK, I've made my mind up!  I Wanna Go!  Don't know if my bike will be ready for a real long ride, but at least part way, I'm in.

Another yooper logging on here. This sounds great. Hope the schedule works out where I can meet you guys at the Mac Bridge and take a couple days off riding with my peers.
Thanks for the tip Bob!  At the moment, I'm thinking of running up 123 to Paradise and Taquamenon Falls.  I don't know if we can get bikes close 'nuf to the falls for a photo op (anyone know?) but maybe!

I'm afraid it's ix-nay on getting the bikes anywhere near T-Falls. They're both (yes two, upper and lower) accessible by foot path only.

MJ, Fuzz,

Welcome to the ride!!  Details will start to flesh out better we get a calendar date to target.  I'm thinking that the T-Falls chunk is looking pretty questionable.  Sure, there is the idea of stopping by Paradise so we can moon Canada, but I'm not sure it's worth the extra hours in the saddle!  ;D

Stay tuned for updates!

Possible photo op:

Hastings Manufacturing Co.  US manufacturer of piston rings for the CB750 (and other Honda models)

It's already on the route between Kalamazoo and Lansing, prolly take 5 minutes to get a photo.  Maybe even a tour "sponsor"??

The route through the U.P. will probably be influenced by where and to whom the "baton" will be handed off.....will it be to the Cheeseheads just north of Green Bay or more toward the Minnesotans around Duluth? The former would suggest US-2, following the Lake Huron I mean, Lake Michigan shore---a good but not great 2 lane highway, and pretty truck-intensive at times, but certainly not a horrible route. The latter would indicate following more of the Lake Superior shoreline and could include some pretty nice scenery----new pavement through Pictured Rocks National Park, and the hilly Marquette and Keweenaw area. A route through the northwestern part of the U.P. is more likely to have have hills and twisties, while the southern part is flatter.

I'd agree about T-falls being a bit out of the way, though I'd recommend any biker make future plans to ride all of Curley Lewis highway going west from Brimley, as well as the twisty section of M-123 that goes from Paradise to Newberry, past Tahquamenon State Park.

Don't you mean US-23 along Lake Huron?

Whoops. Thanks Bob.  :-[
I had the right highway---but the wrong Lake. I meant US-2 along Lake Michigan, from St. Ignace to Escanaba.

That was the other possibility. Nice route, we take it every summer, better visually, than the interior route in the U.P.

Wow, I had no idea Hastings rings was actually in Hastings!   I got family there.  I will always vote for the crookedest route.

Fuzz,

The very first post in this thread has a link to a "working map" on it.  From the bridge, we'd be heading to Marquette for an overnight.  We'd then play in the Keweenaw before heading to a meet up with the Cheeseheads in Iron Mountain.  All subject to change of course, but that's the thought right now.

Yup saw that. Sounds like a plan. Just giving my local-knowledge two cents worth since everything's subject to change. By the time the group gets outta lower Michigan there may or may not be time to meander through the U.P. though I certainly hope that won't be the case.

Us cheezeheads tend to go places (including a ride around Lake Superior with stops in Houghton). Yes, we plan to meet for a handoff somewhere along the border, but the plan is still in flux. Because Illinois is such a long state, the route will depend on riders in the southern part to determine which way IT moves toward Chicago. If IT moved from Ill to Indy and skipped Chicago, we will definately take IT from Wisconsin to the windy city and then head west and northerly.  The alternate is no riders in southern Ill and IT moves from St. Louis north along the Mississippi to Davenport and touches southern Wisconsin (Madison and Miilwaukee) on its way to Chicago. All possibilitites, we just don't know yet. So far the dates seem to indicate mid-July in Michigan.........

So that kinda looks like we're swinging from QC down thru upstate NY & then back to ON & on to MI the way I read Jerry's map.  Have I got that right & is there any detailed info on a route in the NE?

Brooze,

MY dip into upstate NY was a way to cover more of NY rather than just NYC AND pass through Niagra Falls. It's always about having enough riders to cover territory and what those riders wish to/can do while maintaining the RELAY. The ride and routing should be built around what the riders wish to cover. That's your territory, not mine. Enjoy it!  ;)

Firmest dates I have are in this thread:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=83709.0

Which puts Godzilla in Duncan, AZ on 4/24.  It would need to ride through California, cut back across the middle states, through New England and double back through Eastern Canada.  Still too far off to narrow down to even which week Godzilla will cross the Ambassador Bridge,
