Over my head 1972 CB500four
« on: December 21, 2010, 08:45:48 AM »
Picked up this beauty and by beauty I mean piece of crap feeling super ambitious. I had an xs450 that I rebuilt out of college and had to sell to help buy my house so was excited to finally get enough cash saved up to finally get another project bike. I was a mechanic for a couple years but don't have allot of experience with motorcycles so im sure ill be asking people to bail me out on here pretty often. I have rebuilt a few scooters and currently ride a Zuma 125 around but getting tired of hopping on the highway and trying to cruise at those speeds so ready to get this Honda on the road. I am also wanting to get this going because my grandpas health hasn't been too great lately and he recently got a bike so would love to be able to go riding with him. SO, here it is...

So far...
-500t tank, going to have a friend weld in a 22mm bung so I can use a new petcock in a location that wont hit the carbs.
-new hoses
-new plugs
-working on rebuilding the carbs
-new throttle
-rebuilding the right hand switch
-new battery
-new chain

haha yeah my xs450 was a challenge but tons of fun...ended up beating my head on the wall chasing an electrical issue for a couple months though that ended up just being the control switch not getting a good clean ground on the bars  :-\...but it ran when I sold it so im sure I can eventualy get this thing going.

From the pics it looks nicer than you seem to think. I've seen some real garbage that people with a vision turn into a real peach. Looks like a great start and complete enough you could go stock or custom. Good luck and cheers!

I need them like I need an extra butthole but I might be interested in the side bags. Any chance of getting some better pics? Are they in good shape? And most importantly, do you have the hardware to mount them to the 500? Reply here or PM me if you like.

By the way, great bike.

sorry for the long wait about those bags but honest I don't think they are even worth shipping, needs new latches and not in the greatest shape.

NOW.....updates...has been some hitches along the way but head is finally removed, cb500t tank has a new bung welded in a different spot, frame and seat modded to fit...working on the rebuild...pictures...

finally got those bags de-iced and took a couple pics, they are in the for sale thread if anyones still interested and yes they are bates.

Progress on the bike has been slow, apparently I ordered the gasket set for a 500t not 500/4 and from canada so took 2 weeks here, 2 weeks back, and will have to wait 2 weeks for the right one to come in, lame. While im waiting on those ive taken the pistons off and working on getting all the old gaskets off. Also been working on prepping the tank, needs another skim coat of glazing putty but looking decent...not going to be a show bike by any means so not going to try and get it perfect...will leave a little character in it ;)
