I want to make sure I'm understanding the current thinking.  Essentially, all riders who want to participate will be meeting in Austin, going for a Hill Country ride and then heading home.  Is that the gist of it?

If the Austin area is the closest relay ride stop-off/meeting location to you, then that's where you'll join it.  How far you want to continue on the rest of the ride is entirely up to you.  


Ok, then . . . so there IS an official designated route?  What is it?  I want to know where I might be able to join in before Austin.  There's a lot of planning on my end because of work and my brother's upcoming wedding, so I want to be clear on the moto rally  ;D

Yeah, I made that map.  But is sounds like that route was vetoed in the interest of time.  I'm happy to plot a new course if there's a consensus on some sort of route.

If we are going to meet in Austin, I suggest on the west side at the intersection of RR 620 & 2222. There is a large parking lot on the SW corner and a store w/gas, drinks and food.
From there, we can take the infamous "Lime Creek Road", one of the premiere roads in the area that snakes along Lake Travis.
There is good camping in this area for the night of 4/20.
Then west on RR 1431 to Marble Falls, this route is on Architects map.
From there, I suggest we hit back roads west along Lake LBJ and then south to Fredericksberg.
Then North past The Enchanted Rock and to Llano and Big Spring.
 

If this route sounds good, please update your map.

Architect, you guys coming from Houston might consider trailering your bikes to Austin, so you can get in more relay miles. In other parts of the relay, some people who have to travel 180-200 miles to meet up with Godzilla are taking this approach, plus it never hurts to have a chase/support vehicle along. (unless the water pump pukes, like Vern's did. ;) )

BTW guys, this weekend is gonna turn into heavy maintenance for me, #2 started pissing gas everywhere yesterday and #4 has been dripping. Time to reset the floats I suppose.  Timing's off too, gotta track down a connection issue somewhere (which I've tried to find at least ten times and can't. Damned dyna s)

Check the needle and seat for crap.  yes, take the float needle seat out too in case you have stuff building up on top of it.  If it is dirty, make sure the tank filter is good and no crap in the fuel line.

Back to our normally scheduled entertainment.   ;D
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Why not?? They have to travel 165 miles before even seeing Godzilla, plus more to get back home, after biding him a fond adieu. It is a RELAY, and the idea is to carry Godzilla through at least every state in the lower 48 and more on an SOHC. In some areas, such as west TX, NM, and AZ, where we have a dire need of riders, any method of extending the range of the available riders should be used. Godzilla can only ride on one bike at a time! ;)

Hey guys,

I'm trying as hard as I can to have my 75 CB750  roadworthy in time.   Funds are tight now, but I think I'll be very close to making it.

I'm pretty sure I can make some of the dates work - kinda depends on work....I'll know more the closer we get.

Looks like the OK TX route is still up in the air.   I kinda like the idea of the Houston guys meeting up with everyone in Austin.   The interstate ride
down 45 through Dallas to Houston is a beatdown.   Solid 5 hour drive with not much of a let-up in traffic.  

At the very least, I'm in Denton and can offer my place to wrench on bikes if anything was needed.  

Even if I don't get the bike roadworthy in time, if my work schedule allows, I could do a chase vehicle.   I'll start checking in more to see what develops.


Coming out of Oklahoma, you guys could hit 82 west through Muenster (which has some great German food restaurants and meat markets etc) then hit 59 south
at St. Jo  through Bowie to Jackboro, where you'd pick up 281 south to 183 to Georgetown/Lake Travis.   It's a very peaceful low-traffic ride as compared with 75 into Dallas and
then over.  Just a thought.

A big thank-you to guys planning this.   What a great idea.

How long is currently slated for Texas, alone?  I'm just thinking out loud, but coming out of OK through Dallas and down to Houston would be a full day.  Houston to Austin and then a portion of the Hill Country ride would be day two.  The remainder of the Hill Country ride and up to West Texas would be a third day.  If Houston is out of the picture, as it may be necessary to do, the Texas portion may be only two days, possibly stretched to three.  Is this consistent with the overall schedule?

I was thinking the schedule (if we include Houston) would be more like, OK to Dallas day 1.  Dallas to Houston takes up day 2.  On day 3 we ride Houston to Austin/Hillcountry Bonanza.  Day 4 will get us about halfway to Lubbock unless we push it, and then the NM handoff would be towards the end of day 5.


You have to remember Arch, we're riding some pretty old metal here, you have to allot time for breakdowns, cooldowns, rest stops (a plethora I'm sure), and slow pokes.  There are likely gonna be some....shall we say "old-timers"? riding as well  :D.  I think your two day ride theory is a *little* bit of a stretch.  Just my opinion though

I agree about the older machines and bike travel in general being more tiring - I'm looking forward to many stops along the way to stretch the old back  ;D  That was one reason I thought we'd want to avoid the major highways in favor of slower-paced roads.  The OK border to Dallas is only 90 miles - that's why I figured on pushing farther into Texas on the first day.  Dallas to Houston is about 4 hours by car, so I thought it would be do-able to get from OK to Houston in one day.  I haven't done a long ride like this, so I have to rely on others to help judge the time.

If we dodge Houston altogether, what route will the Dallas peeps likely take to Austin?

The schedule is to bring Godzilla from somewhere in OK to DFW on 4-19, from DFW to Austin on 4-20, to Lubbock( or Big Spring) on 4-22, and then ending up at Duncan, AZ around noon on 4-24.

Hey Scottly,

You might consider taking Hwy82 (just past the TX - OK border) west to St. Jo.  In St. Jo, you can pick up hwy 59 south all the way to Jacksboro.
In Jacksboro, You can hit 281, like you have planned, all the way to Burnet.

I-35 through Denton to Ft.Worth can get congested and a bit crazy depending on the time of day.  In fact, I try to avoid the interstate as much as I possibly can.
I'll admit I am far more conservative than I was in my youth.    Just don't care for the cagers much anymore.

Might just be me, but I definitely prefer quieter / less traveled roads.    It would probably add an hour to the riding time, but it would offer easier places
to pull off and rest etc.    More peaceful and less stressful as well.    Been a long time since I took a ride down to Austin, but that was the route we always took.


Another bonus:   In St. Jo and some of the smaller Texas towns, you can actually buy gas without ethanol.

Again - this is just my 2 cents.   You guys are doing a great thing here.

I pm'd Jerry 2 days ago about adding a day to TX, have not heard back yet.

It's a shame the biggest state only gets two days.

Just an observation.  Allowing 1/2 day to go 90 miles might be a bit generous (OK border to DFW), as does burning another 1/2 day to go approximately 100 miles (Big Spring/Lubbock to NM border).  If both of those got pushed into adjacent days, Texas would gain another full day.

The first half of the day to get to DFW is allotted to get from OKC to the border, also the riders from DFW to the border for the hand-off will have a 180 mile round trip.

The second half of the day from Big Spring/Lubbock to the NM border is allotted to get to Las Cruces, NM.

Hey Scottly,

You might consider taking Hwy82 (just past the TX - OK border) west to St. Jo.  In St. Jo, you can pick up hwy 59 south all the way to Jacksboro.
In Jacksboro, You can hit 281, like you have planned, all the way to Burnet.

I-35 through Denton to Ft.Worth can get congested and a bit crazy depending on the time of day.  In fact, I try to avoid the interstate as much as I possibly can.
I'll admit I am far more conservative than I was in my youth.    Just don't care for the cagers much anymore.

Might just be me, but I definitely prefer quieter / less traveled roads.    It would probably add an hour to the riding time, but it would offer easier places
to pull off and rest etc.    More peaceful and less stressful as well.    Been a long time since I took a ride down to Austin, but that was the route we always took.


Another bonus:   In St. Jo and some of the smaller Texas towns, you can actually buy gas without ethanol.

Again - this is just my 2 cents.   You guys are doing a great thing here.

The only problem with heading west of DFW is trying to meet up with the Dallas folks.  They would have to ride all the way out to Weatherford or someplace. 

What about meeting in Denton?  We take "It" there on the 19th and then meet up in Denton on the morning of 4/20 and head to Austin.  We can be there by nightfall, with a lunch stop in Dublin (maybe). 
I updated the "prelim" map to show this.  Just a thought.  The route is completely open to debate.  The meeting points and time frame are important. I also added the meeting spot in Austin that was suggested.  620 and 2222.

CBGhia, good to hear from you! Can you plot a route from Big Spring to Las Cruces,NM on the map? It would be very helpful to have an educated guess about miles/time from Austin to Big Spring, to Las Cruces.

Guess I missed the guys coming in from Dallas.  Was really only thinking of the 82 west into St. Jo for the ride through Muenster - just a very unique old German town in the middle of nowhere w/ good food and ethaol free gas.  Those new routes route look good.   380 from Denton into Decatur usually isn't that bad - depending on the time of day. (You'd only really want to avoid it around sundown - the glare on that road is pretty bad sometimes - lots of crazy driving truckers as well.  But - it's only about 30 minutes from Denton to Decatur.    You guys can definitely stop at my house for rest or any wrenching that would need to happen.  I'm a few exits down from 380 and very close to the highway.  My house is small, but my shop is pretty well stocked.    There are a few good spots in Denton to park cycles if we need a few beers or some food.    I'll check back in later.

Another couple options:

The Dallas guys could also meet up in Denton and we could ride up to Gainesville to catch 82 and the guys coming out of OK -
Or... The Dallas guys could head up 75 to 82 and over (pretty peacefull after you get through McKinney).  We could catch them at the juction of 35 and 82.   Might save them a bit of the headache that is:   I-35 into Denton from Dallas.

Starting to ramble now....   On another note, I just ordered some new tires, chain & sprockets.  My only real concern now is the wiring harness.  Everything seems to run pretty strong.  Haven't got to air it out yet.  Need the tires & chain.
