ole leaky (carb+petcock)
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:08:15 PM »
Hi guys,
I bought a k1 that was sitting for 20 years, fortunately in a garage. The fuel in the tank had made a mess in there, but fortunately petcock was closed so the carbs were miraculously clean.
After I knew that the bike fired (off a temp tank) I pulled the rack and went thru the carbs , cleaned up the jets etc. The (paper?) washers at the base of each seat were pretty dried out and shot, so I used (fuel safe) o-rings that I had in a kit.
The petcock was totally blocked and I had to really go pretty crazy cleaning out the concretions in there. I also used o-rings as a substitute for the paper gaskets in this case too.
Now, at least one of the carbs needle and seat is not sealing. Not only does it come out of the bowl overflow, but out of the air inlet as well.
I threw all the (copper) floats in a big jar of water and they stayed afloat, and no bubbles rose up when submerged, so I think they're fine.
THe petcock also doesn't ever totally go 'off'.
Before I just replace everything, does anyone here thing these problems are related to the o-rings, or just old-atrophied softparts?
  Thanks and Happy Holidays!
