Santee Box question from newbie
« on: December 22, 2010, 05:31:53 AM »
I am confused about the starter connection in a Santee box.....step 12 shows taking a lead out of the box to the starter....but the only connection out of the starter cover is to a small screw next to the the starter cover....blue/red stripe wire covered with a hard plastic boot....do I attach me lead here? or do i need to look somewhere else?  Also the starter button connection only shows one wire to the button , is this assuming the ground is the box itself?  if so with a plastic light switch i then need to wire a separate ground to complete?  Any help would be appreciated.....wanting to finish my project

Welcome to the forums.  We can probably help you out but there are a few more things we need to know about your question first.
-Do you have a web link to the proceedure you're following so we can follow along?
-What bike are you working on?

Santee boxes are bolted to the top of the engine by using the existing bolts.  This makes the entire box a source of ground and allows one power wire to be used for start solenoids and such With the other wire secured to the nearest ground source.  I have also seen them with connector blocks for positive and negative connections neatly in a row.  The block is then powered or grounded as needed.  There is not much room in there for a bunch of wires so short runs are needed. I hope this helps.  There is a complete explanation of the classic Santee on hondachopper.com.

I think that blue/red wire may be the oil pressure switch?
The starter motor power cable is a fat black one (over 1/4" diameter) with a large ring terminal on the end, and it comes out where the other engine wires come out - not at the starter cover.
The battery "-" has to solidly connected to the frame and engine with another big fat wire. Battery "+" goes to the solenoid switch in the santee box (another big fat wire) and then the other solenoid terminal goes to the starter motor wire. The necessary ground is already connected inside the starter motor.
All bike power (except the starter motor) connects through a fuse from the solenoid terminal where the battery "+" wire connects.
