Team Central Rockies - UT, CO, & KS
« on: December 22, 2010, 11:28:09 AM »
Hey guys, we are just beginning to bring riders onboard for our region. We have no set rides and some great ideas are beginning to roll in. The possible rides in this area are endless as we have some VERY beautiful scenery in our region but many miles to cover. The rides are dependent on you guys. You pick what you want to ride and we work together and connect the dots. We have to pick up "IT" at a relay from Team California then hand off "IT" with a relay to Team Central Region around the MO/KS border area. I envision "IT" hitting our region perhaps around May.

Let's get going and plan some routes! Let me know what you think. WE NEED RIDERS.  I'm looking forward to working with you and riding with you!

I think hitting 4 corners and coming up 285 (I think it's 285) through the valley to Denver would be an awesome ride. Not sure about pickup point or heading out east as there isn't much to look at but that's just my .02.

4 Corners (nowhere else could "IT" be in 4 states at one time!!), Million Dollar Hwy, Telluride are definite areas of interest in W.CO! Pikes Peak & Mt Evans would be the highest places (elevation wise  ;)) "IT" could go in the US no matter where. Rocky Mtn Park. LoDo. Coors Field for a game. Even skiing possibly. My place for a SOHC4 party  ;D Keep the list coming.

The actual pickup point for Team Rocky would probably be the other side of Utah since that's part of our territory. We gotta get any Utah riders involved too. REALLY beautiful rides in Utah for those of you that haven't ridden there! Moab & Arches to Monument Valley then sneak into 4 Corners. Perhaps we can get the Utah guys to meet us in Moab?

Headed into KS I'd suggest US50 as a south alternative or US36 as a north alternative then take the other one back maybe. I-70 only if we are in a hurry and I can't imagine why. We need to get some KS guys involved to let us know the places to see and the routes to ride in their territory. Maybe US36 with a hand off and Team Central could ride US36 all the way to Indy.

Most of you guys are near Denver. If you know the Denver guys please have them check in with me. When we get a better idea of our riders we should meet up in your area and discuss the possibilities. I know we have a fair number of SOHC4 members close by.

I have briefly PM'd with member Jordan from Utah and he's trying to get something together out there. I'd love to haul my bike out to Utah and ride back but I'm going to be graduating from college this spring and hopefully getting as job so my big time free time will be at a premium. Jordan said he was thinking about heading out of Utah into Evanston, WY but I don't think anyone has come on board for WY so I suggested Vernal UT or Dinosaur CO (IT in Dinosaur, that's a thin line between cheesy and brilliant!) as a pick up point. We could run Hwy 40 to Kremmling then Hwy 9 south all the way to Hwy 50 then back up to Colo Spgs for the party at Jerry's (I think it's a great idea! ;D). I was thinking about running across Kansas because I have some family out that way. I was thinking Hwy 40 then to Hwy 96 but I don't know enough about KS roads and would have to look into that. There are a million ways to roll around Colorado and all of them are beautiful so I'm open to making anything work.

Or...131 from Steamboat Spgs, Glenwood Canyon, 133 to 92 to 50, Royal Gorge and Pikes Peak. Then work our way up Deckers, Evergreen (Mt. Evans), Rocky Mtn. National Park (Trail Ridge Road) then out to the boring eastern plains, I'd rather run out of Colo south of 70, seems a bit more interesting. I'm still thinking about going all the way to K.C. then breaking off to head up to Omaha, but I'd be open to whatever any Kansas riders might want.

Not sure what the conditions in the mountains will be like when "IT" gets here but my wife also had the idea of getting a pic infront of the Stanley. I've never been there but I've seen it in the movie ;D

Good routes Freaky. I've been on some of them but not 131, 133, 92. 92 runs by the north rim of the Black Canyon. I've been on a bit of 96 from 50 to Ordway. Wide open roughish surface no holes maintained well. Don't know about the KS secondary roads. I've been on the majority of E CO roads through the plains with my job and have found that the US hwys are usually better maintained and designed. I'd bet the US hwys through KS would all be good too: 24, 50, 36. Looks like 36 and 50 are more primary - more traffic but better roads while 24 is more secondary according to the map legends.

I hope you can do a bunch of Kansas. We're going to have to do what we can with whatever riders we can bring on board.

Apex says we need to get "IT" haunted at the Stanley - great idea.

I used to run down 131 then over I-70 to 133 from Steamboat Spgs to Marble when I was trucking years ago but only did the stretch on 92 a couple of times and it was back out to Grand Jct. but it is great scenery and while off the beaten path still maintained. I have relatives in the Hays, LaCrosse, and Great Bend area and if I'm going that way I'd like to see them, especially if I'm all by myself.

Trail Ridge Road runs right into Estes Park so a stop at the Stanley could certainly be and should certainly be on the route. Did I see we might be doing this here in late April or May? Trail Ridge should be open by then, but with the way this winter has started off we could still have snow in July. :D

Sorry I'm not tossing out any routes but I'm not the super familiar with backroads having been a four wheel creature up until this last year. However a stop at Red Rocks, no matter which way we go, is a must. Nothing says Colorado like Red Rocks.

And nothing says Red Rocks like a concert especially if we tailgate and indulge in the parking lot with "IT"

Any ideas for the KS leg of the trip?  Looks like it needs to come out of CO and then head into KC.  I-70 is the straight shot but I am not too interested in riding on I-70.  Any ideas out there for the KS leg of the run?  Has anyone ridden on Hwy 24 from east of Goodland heading east-looks like you could run that all the way to Lawrence.  We would be able to get pictures of "IT" at Allen Field House (a somewhat famous land mark) and then run on into KC.

Eydugstr is in KC and wants to ride eastern KS. I'm also thinking US24 into KC but it's still open for riders and discussion. I-70 IS NOT open for discussion!!  ;D That's for cars  ;) Still waiting for more guys in Kansas. Where are they!!

Checking in, everyone! Thanks to whoever came up with this ride idea! The SO seems cool with it, so will be able ride & help out.

My plan/idea was to hook up with somewhere in western or central KS, hook up with the relay/other riders back towards KC and possibly some into Missouri or whatever the next state might be, then swing back to KC.

Although I am not familar with southwestern KS, last summer got to do a fair amount of riding in central KS and found some cool routes (and stops) through there.

The main thing is this, with KS being sort of a "central" state, if you guys in Co come up with a point where you'll be crossing into KS, and get it sorted out what city & state you are traveling to after you go through KS, could really get some neat routes/stops figured out and go from there.  KS has some really neat two lane hwy's towards the center of the state, and in the northeastern section near the KS/MO border.

Jerry - One question I did forget to ask...Is this just for CB750's only?  If I missed something someone please just direct me with a link, will go from there.

The ride is for any sohc 4, not just the 750.

I am in eastern KS/western MO and would be interested in the ride.  Would like to have a better idea on the dates due to schedule but this sounds like a lot of fun.

I was thinking about heading out of Colorado on the south side of I-70. I've got family mostly in the Hays/La Crosse area that I'd like to see if I'm heading that way. I also figured I'd stick with the Kansas riders to K.C. then brake off and head up to Omaha and see my folks. Any objection to meeting up in La Crosse?

My bad - meant to ask if this was just for CB's, or if riding other stuff was okay.

If I understand the "official rules" of the ride any bike can partake in the ride, but "IT" has to be carried by and handed off ONLY to a CB SOHC4.

Freaky1- La Crosse/Hays area could be a good meeting point.  Could head north on 183 to 24 and then head east towards KC -OR- since those two towns are south of 70 we could take 96 to 56 and head east towards KC.  Just a couple ideas- I have never ridden or driven on 24 or 56 so I don't know which one is the better one of the two.  Like others have said I wont touch I-70.  The 24 route into KC would keep us off any major highways (I-70/I-35) the 56 route looks like we would have to take some 2 laners to avoid I-35.  It would be 56 to 68 and 68 east through Osage city/ Pomona/ Ottawa/ Louisburg.

Just some ideas.

"If I understand the "official rules" of the ride any bike can partake in the ride, but "IT" has to be carried by and handed off ONLY to a CB SOHC4". This is correct.

While I haven't been on any rural highways in KS, my thought is US24 is probably the better of the suggested routes road condition wise strictly due to it being a somewhat major US hwy vs state route. At least thats what I've seen in Colorado. Scenery is a different subject though.

We could take Freaky's route then head up to US24 even. Say, ride up north through Rocky Mountain Park then head to Colorado Springs and take "IT" up Pikes Peak then ride east from the Springs after a party at my place staying south of I-70. Doesn't matter to me. If I'm ridng any of these suggested routes, and I hope I am, they are all new pavement to me so I'd like that. Main thing is the hand offs are coordinated with the eastern guys.

Sounds like we kinda have the I-25 area to KC dicked except for final details, now we gotta work on NV/UT border area to I-25. I like the way you guys do business!  ;)

I am aware of only one other member in the SLC area, so getting the "IT"/ Banner(my vote) from NV into and through UT may be a bit difficult unless more riders sign up. My CB500 may or may not be road worthy within the time frame, I just can't commit until I know for sure. If it is I could possibly pick IT up at the Salt Flats or in Bendover NV./UT. on the west border (I80) and bring it into SLC area. If it happened around September it would correlate with the Vintage GP races at Bonneville and Miller Race track. But again that is contingent upon my bikes condition and I would really like to see some more UT riders chime in, I know they are out there I have seen quite a few tooling around this past summer. While I could spend a week riding around Colorado in my dreams, my official vote is Hwy 40 into Colorado, to Kremmling and south on Hwy 9. Fairplay head east on 285, around through Evergreen and up to Mt. Evans summit, and back down into Denver-ish. Then Hwy 85 down to 67 into Woodland Park and party in the Springs. Then 94 to 40 then 287 to 96 all the way to Rush Center, Kansas.

I think IT and our U.S. Domination Relay would be very incomplete without hitting the highest paved road in North America. I mean it's only 14,240 & I had a harder time last summer up there than my bike did. Plus there is a restaurant at Echo Lake just before you head up the road that all kinds of bikes and people stop at, get some good publicity while were at it.

I hope we can get some more riders to chime in on the Utah leg, I'm somewhat shocked that Jordan seems to be our only member out there. I told a buddy of mine about this and though about trucking the bikes to Vegas and riding back from there boy he was all for it. But alas I have no job right now and still am a poor student, he is not rich either so unless something major changes it's a good dream.

If the KS "meeting point" is in Rush Center or Lacrosse......would definitely recommend stopping at the Kansas Motorcycle Musuem in Marquette along the way.

It looks like I will be doing the Nevada leg.  I'll be flexible about where the handoff into Utah will be.

Greg,

That's great. Still a little early for our Team I think. Looks like CO and KS are coming together fairly well but no real solutions for UT yet. It would be great if we can find a Utah member that perhaps could meet you at The Salt/Wendover or at the border on US50! I love the US50 ride across NV. The ride from Salt Lake City through Price to I-70 and then to Arches/Moab then to Telluride would be really nice too.
