Thought about a southern route through Arches, Moab, 4 Corners, Telluride but felt it would distance all the Denver area guys and may not have enough riders. Guess we could always head north on the Peak to Peak and hit Estes Park and some of RMNP. US40 to Granby, I-70 to Idaho Springs and pick up Peak to Peak. GJ to 50 maybe but 50 is kinda boring except for Monarch Pass and even that could be a problem in early May. Good BBQ in Gunnison at 5B's. Big Horn Canyon isn't bad but the desert type area isn't my favorite. 50 the other side of La Junta is nice open prairie road. Haven't done 50 in KS. Options!! Glad you're on top of this Steve!

I'm working my butt off to be ready to leave to head out to Utah, obviously 5/8 would be better. At the very least I'll pick you guys up somewhere in Colo and if I have to ride with a pillow duct taped to a metal seat pan the so be it. ;D ;D ;D

Freaky, you're making me get off this laptop and out to the garage!  Thanks for the motivation!  Now, if I could just get the dang retainer clip out of my cruddy master cylinder.  5/8 would be better for me, too, given I apparently have an 18th anniversary 5/1.  But, if it's the weekend of 5/1, I want to figure out how to hook up with you guys 5/2-?.

Jerry, thanks for staying atop this - you might not realize just how much joy and anticipation you've introduced to folks' lives by getting this ball rolling. It sure does make garage time more fun having a deadline in sight.  I think I can speak for all of us when I say "thanks" for all you're doing!

You're welcome. It's a labor of love for me.

What week works best for you guys 5/2 or 5/9?

Everyone please chime in! Terry CB650 and I (and anyone else that wants to ride Utah) can possibly pick up Godzilla on 5/2 and get it back to metro Denver then you guys can take it from there while we're back at work on Thursday. I should be able to head east that following Mon or Tues into Kansas.

OR - Ofreen can possibly meet us the next week on 5/9 and we could press on without having the extra week cushion and keep on riding through KS.

Can you guys ride during the week? Who can ride Kansas and what days of the week?

Since Trail Ridge Road will NOT be opened what alternative riding would you like to do? I'm still planning on riding US40 and cut south at Kremmling.

I'm available during the week and 5/2 would probably work better for me but it's not a huge deal either way. How many guys do you have riding to Utah, Jerry?

My riding will depend on what bike I ride: If the 750 is done I will want to go longer.  If I have to take the 550 then I am not sure how far I will want to go on it.  Weekends work best for me.

hey kck3,
let me know what route your taking to meet up with the ride i'm in topeka. like you it depends on how for the meet up is. i can't ride my 550 to far it's a cafe and those clubmans and the fiberglass unpadded seat can take a toll.

Riders, please post your logs here:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=85509.0

Be as detailed or brief as you like, but please share any eventful moments of your ride, interesting people you may have met, what you liked the most, etc. Don't need lots of pictures, maybe one of the handoff or maybe a group shot of the riders you were with for however far you were able to ride. You don't necessarily have to be the one that carried the baton, but you do have to have already ridden in order to post there.

Please reserve that thread for RIDER LOGS ONLY. Comments to the riders logs there would stretch that thread out to be quite large long before the relay nears completion. By keeping that thread limited to RIDER LOGS ONLY should help improve readability for many of our forum members. I have renamed the "Godzilla Sightings in Daytona!" to "Godzilla Sightings in Daytona AND BEYOND". Please continue to use that thread for posting comments, quick updates, creative pictures of Godzilla, expanding upon the unfolding story of Godzilla's adventures, (almost) anything goes in that thread. Please reserve the Rider Log thread for factual reports and rider's insights only. Our forum moderator will be deleting comments from the Rider Log thread to help promote it's linear progression as our Relay moves forward.

Enjoy the ride guys, Godzilla's comin your way!

Hey Jerry!

Let me know when you have your schedule firmed up.  Enquirering Minds (and Bloggers) wana know!!  A list of overnight locations and dates would be AWESOME!!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

theofam - I ditched my stock rear master because it was impossible to get apart, rusted. Unless your looking to stay stock, a XS650 Yamaha master bolts right up, some minor work on the linkage but nothing serious.

On the subject of the ride, while I would rather ride Colo and Utah, I'll ride anywhere I can get in to. Without a doubt the later start to Utah would be better for me. My wife only works Tues thru Fri so that side will be a pain either way, but I bug her more tonight. The least amount of headache would be to meet up with everyone from Colo on Friday and ride through the weekend, but I live for the challenge.

I'm guessing Mt. Evans will be closed too but you never know. I'm all for heading south on 9 out of Kremmling then maybe over Hoosier Pass and down into Fairplay, I'm sure it will still be a bit chilly whatever way we go.

if I could just get the dang retainer clip out of my cruddy master cylinder.

theofam - Find the gap in the clip, then go to the opposite side of the circlip and pull on it there with a small pick.  It'll come out.  DAHIK.

Jerry, KS area guys - My job's scheduling makes about as much sense as a football bat, so I told the boss to reserve may 14-21 for me.  If I need to move it up, I'll need to know within a couple weeks to get it done.  Please let me know.

OK guys, a pattern may be emerging. Looks like the Utah route is a definite now. We'll just have to pin down what those riders can do. Terry and I can head out on a Sun but have to be back Wed. Right Terry??

I'm expecting all Coloriders to ride some of Colorado. Fair assumption since that would fall on the weekend??

And Kansas is emerging too with Pinhead and Eydugstr meeting up in Oakley, KS. I'd love to ride to Topeka for Motorcycle Classics magazine but may not have the extra day depending on which week we ride (that is if I have to be in Burlington that Thursday)

Idea: Utah guys (weekday riders) pick up Godzilla and bring him back to the Denver area by a Wednesday. Local guys ride him around Colorado until Sunday. Colorado KS riders (weekday riders) will depart Front Range Sunday and head towards KC meeting the 2 KS guys in Oakley with maybe 2 days (sun & mon) to Topeka.

My commitments are work every other week in Burlington, CO Th, Fr, Sat. I can do that provided it's the right week while you guys are trolling around Colorado. I'd normally work 5/5, 5/6, 5/7 so I could probably ride on both sides of those dates.

Tentative/Initial Plan Ride dates for Team Central Rockies. Subject/likely to change with some fine tuning.

5/1 Sun - depart Denver ~ noon for Grand Junction ~250 miles
5/2 Mon - Handoff in Spanish Fork, UT ~ 233 miles around noon then head east on US40 with an overnight stop along the way. Vernal, UT/G.J. perhaps? ~160 miles (Ofreen hands off to Rxman, CB650 aka Terry, Apex_Seeking aka Craig, 78 k550 aka Paul- who else wants to ride? GJ Steve, that's who!  :D )
5/3 Tues pm/Wed am - Arrive greater Denver area ~320 miles
5/4 Wed to 5/7 Sun - Godzilla cruises the Rockies and scans the eastern horizon from atop Pikes Peak
5/7 Sun Depart Colorado Front Range and head into Kansas meeting up with Eydugstr, kck3, and ___ (jamesb?)in Oakley, KS ~223 miles
5/7 Sun Overnight in Oakley??
5/8 Mon Oakley to Topeka ~326 miles and the meeting with Motorcycle Classics magazine Tues 5/9 (Rx, CB650, Eydudstr, kck3, jamesb, donr, Pinhead, anyone else??)
5/9 Tue Godzilla heads east with Team Central and Central Rockies toward Missouri

OK guys, this is the first true attempt at a schedule. Time for your input. What I am attempting to accomplish is get the handoff legs in place since they are both long haul rides and will be the more difficult sections to staff. Please take a look at your calendars. See how close this will work for you and provide input. I need names to plug into dates and sections. We'll go from there.

The initial handoff is perhaps the tightest time wise with CB650 aka Terry and myself doing the riding across the vast unmanned expanses of Utah. We will depart Denver Sun 5/1 at noon with an overnight in Grand Junction (~250 miles) and must be back to greater Denver no later than early Wed AM 5/4 and preferrably Tue 5/3.

Now, for all you Denver area guys that may not be able to do some serious road miles there is time between the Utah and the Kansas rides. This is YOUR time and I hope all can participate. I hope there is plenty of time for you guys. Please work together and plan some serious seat time to visit the places you'd like to go. Please let me know. If we can head toward Kansas on Sun afternoon 5/7 that would give the Coloriders 3 to 4 days to ride to Topeka and back. Should we need to wait until the following week that would cut short the Coloriders Kansas time by 1 day and prevent the Coloriders from meeting up in Topeka with Motorcycle Classics. The Kansas riders would still be able to do that.

For the Kansas riders, we have a good idea of what you guys wish to do but what about the dates? Don R, what can you do to meet up in Topeka for the handoff?

Jerry

I love it! All I need to do now is get the bike done enough that it can go. I'd like to be on as much of it as I can and now that there are tentative dates I can talk to the wife about her maybe getting a day or two off so I can join in either the CO to UT segment or CO to KS.

My calendar is, well............. You're right. We want to leave on Sun 5/1 to pick up Godzilla on Mon 5/2. Hoping to head into KS on Sun 5/8 or Mon 5/9. We gotta figure out some way for you to take Godzilla for a ride! I was thinking that Don R is planning on riding into Topeka before heading back too. We should check in with him and see what kind of time table he has to work with before writing you (kck3) off totally.
