fork tube lowers clear coat?
« on: December 22, 2010, 03:13:31 PM »
hello, i have a 77 honda cb 550k.  i sanded and polished my fork lowers and i dropped them off at a custom motorcycle shop a few days ago to get a clear coat put on them.  i called them back today to see if they were done and they said it cant be done, the clear coat wont stick.  can u even clear coat these things? i never thought it would be a problem

I have mine cleared with powdercoat, but these are cleared from the factory and done every day. They need only to get the wax off and use acetone or lacquer thinner to remove all traces of wax.

The forks, cases, cylinders, cylinderhead, hubs, brakes - everything polished is clear powder -

If you polished your parts to a mirror finish then your shop is right-can't be done or you do get it to stick it wont last very long. All the cleared aluminum from the Honda factory was given more of a satin finish before they coated them. You need a little bit of a tooth for paint to stick otherwise it's like painting a sheet of glass....I haven't tried the clear powder coating method as described by Ilbikes but sounds interesting though would be wary of exposing any aluminum to such high temperatures when curing the powder and losing its temper. I know of no other product for PERMANENTLY coating mirror polished aluminum #8 other than a good clear paste wax.

Looking gooood!!  I didn't know clear powdercoat was available.

Powdercoating will not damage aluminum - had it done (white) several times.
