Greg, those pics reminded me of the Gold King mine, just outside of Jerome. Don, the proprietor has all kinds of antique cars and motorcycles. The annual VW bus event is held there. I can try to contact him to see if we could be allowed to camp over night, if anyone is interested. From there to Seligman is probably around 2 hours... Of course, if we stay in Jerome, we'll have to check out the Spirit Room, especially if it happens on a Friday or Saturday night, when they have live music.

Jerome would be a great place for some pix of the relay. And it doesn't get any better on a bike than 89A.

Hey all, I've been sorta lurkin on this one and I haven't read every post but here's a route that i think would be a lot of fun from Santa Cruz to the Golden Gate. I'd personally be interested in riding south one day to meet whoever's coming up from SoCal, camp out for the night and then do from there to Reno. That'd be some seriously hard riding to make in one day depending on how far south the starting point is. I live in Pacifica, right on the coast (literally) about 15 mi. south of SF and depending on how many people are involved may be able to provide couch or camping facilities at my place and use of my shop for tinkering. Perhaps a night camping closer to Tahoe would be in order, there are many possibilities.

Here's a shot of the barbecue pit in front of my house, should we decide that camping there sounds like fun.

SF to Reno

Google maps calls that an 8.5 hour ride, probably more like 12. Definitely an overnighter and maybe then some. Anyone interested in a multi-day, Bay Area camping/cheap hotel trip? Do we have some idea of when this will be happening yet?

Matt,

That looks like some interesting riding. I think the guys should strongly consider that routing and be done with that segment. That is if they plan to go inland prior to that and not do the coast. That would be a great way to end up Team CA's regional ride. Ofreen (Greg) could pick it up from there.

Do you guys have any other routing that would connect to that?

Do you mean connect to Santa Cruz? I would assume essentially take the 1 up from LA w/ a few cuts and side trips to avoid traffic and do some fun riding. That will connect right into Santa cruz.

Hwy 1 from Morro Bay north is pretty awesome riding, especially compared to 101.

I'm assuming that is Highway 4 over Ebbett's Pass. Its a beautiful ride but the pass may still be shut down.I guess if it is,we could take 49 to 88 or 80 to get to Reno.

Also, just from reading through other posts, it looks like this will be happening in the first week of May. I assume if IT leaves Vegas on the 1st or 2nd of the month we'll have IT a day or two later. Can anyone confirm this? I think KSLRR is picking it up from the AZ crew. It'd be cool to get some pics at Alices' on a busy weekend but I'd be just as happy to do this midweek and avoid the traffic. I'm self-employed so my schedule is pretty flexible. If nobody's coming all the way up to SF from LA I could ride south and pick it up where ever they want to meet and maybe hold it till the weekend so workin folks can get in on this. Also, how flexible is Ofreen for the pickup?

Thats 88. I haven't been on that road but I've been on 4 and 80 lotsa times. 88 would be cool for me.It looks like if you followed the plan you mapped out....it would keep you off the interstates (desirable).I still haven't decided where I might jump in but I'm definitely game to take it to Fernley,Nv. to pass on. Alice's would be a great photo op if the south crew were to come up from Monterey area to meet you.

I am, however, pretty familiar with the roads from SoCal up to here. That ride from Santa Cruz to SF is pretty epic. Also, I've never ridden a motorcycle on that northern route I posted but I've done plenty of camping trips up through Lake Berryessa and the Downieville/gold country area and they are both motorcycle paradise. Whichever route we take, I may loop it and take the opposite route home just to get some more spots under my belt.
If I end up doing Monterey or further south all the way to NV that's quite a bit of riding. It might be cool to hand it off to you somewhere for the final leg.

We have at least 2.5 months to fine tune but it never hurts to start early. I think we have some great ride plans going so far. Anymore NorCals gonna chime in??? I really wanna get a buttload of SOHC's in one group. Might be the chance of a lifetime.

The way things are shaping up with team SW, it is starting to look like the relay might enter CA earlier than the original schedule, possibly as early as 4-26 or 4-27. Still too soon to tell for sure, and this would be assuming no lay-overs.

When I lived at Tahoe, Hwy 50 suffered a landslide at Strawberry on the west side of the pass and cut off from the lake from March until September of 83. Used to ride from Sac thru Jackson, up 88 to 89 and to the lake a lot. Beautiful ride. Worked as a lift op at Kirkwood until the 1st of May...it can still be real cold up there, make sure you dress appropriately.

. I'm getting a booth at the Vintage Motorcycle show and swap at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds March 26th, maybe I'll print up a flyer and try to recruit some riders. Speaking of which, I'll be showing a bike or two, if anyone else is down we should have a SOHC4.net area.

I am fairly flexible. The more notice the better, so I can square it with work. I already told the boss I'll need some time around the first week of May and there's no problem.

I went last year and it was sick. They have outdoor motorcross racing, indoor flat track, and multiple buildings for American, British and Japanese/Italian bikes as well as a large swap meet space and the obligatory parking lot "unofficial" vendors. Japanese bikes were VERY under represented. We had my buddies 77 CB400F in our booth just as a conversation piece and it attracted a lot of attention. His bike is well maintained w/ 52k miles on the clock. Definitely not what most would consider a show bike however the judges kept stopping by the booth trying to judge it and the promoter asked us to come back next year and enter the show. There were definitely some gorgeous bikes on display but about a third of the Jap/Ital hall sat empty. I plan on showing my near mint CB200T and possibly my decent shape w/ some mods 77CB750F this year in addition to having the vendor space. Check the event page for more info. If I can figure out where the pics are from last year I'll post them up there.

Getting a little ahead of schedule would be preferable to being behind. That buys an extra day or 2 for issues or a layover. Please do NOT wait any longer than necessary to develop your route. We can always plug the days into that.

KSLRR is not going to be able to ride last I heard. Myles, do you have a plan for AZ into your area?

Matt - thanks for putting these maps together. That will make it easier for the guys to join in.
