She's in pretty good shape.  25k original miles.  The tank is really the only part that needs real work.  It has a few dents, and a miserable creem job that is flaking and blocking the carbs.

When I was working on the electrics, this MoFo dropped out onto my garage!!  I later found his hourglass-bellied mate and they both met the same firey end (blowtorch).  Black widows are the only spiders I kill!

I just read a post the other day about cleaning up the Kreem with acetone and I think something else (do a search...it was a recent post). The more I read about Kreem....the more pi$$ed I get. Seems most of the stuff I hear about it is all horror stories. Go with POR-15 or Red-Kote and make sure to follow the instructions to the tee. I think that same post mentioned having it done at a radiator shop as thats what they do all the time and it will be done right. Congrads on the new scoot.....get er' on the road in time for the rally. Laters...

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but a good buddy of mine (whom I consider to be the God of all things motorcycles) says POR-15 is worse than Kreem.  He recommends www.HirschAuto.com.

I've read way worse things about the Kreem. Most people agree that any of these products can have negative results if not done properly. I'm thinking more and more about letting the pros at the radiator shop do mine. I'm talking about my original dent-free tank that has hella rust inside. I'm hoping it hasn't gone too thin to coat. Whatever you guys decide....hope it works for ya.

My project bike '74 CB550 wasn't as nice looking as that one.  Mine wasn't as complete...needing front brake parts along with some other pieces... (rear grab bar & signals, speedo, etc.) Tank isn't kreemed on mine and it only has light rust in some spots inside.

The trick with POR-15 (used it a lot on car bodies when living in Ohio for 19 yrs) is to have the metal completely bone dry before you use the POR. POR reacts with water and flash cures if the metal is wet. The result is trapped moisture and a coating that perforates given some time and vibration. That trapped moisture is worse than the original rust as it will rot through quickly if you are in a climate prone to rust.  Metal needs moisture and some heat to rust. Won't rust as much in freezing weather...

The more I read about Kreem....the more pi$$ed I get.

I have to say that most of the failed Kreem jobs are due to improper/impatient prep work.
The one I did is still working fine 10 years later.  I also spent a month on it to prep it right inside so it was ready for the coating and thoroughly dried and set hard.
It's kind of like any paint job, if the prep isn't right, the paint either won't look right or won't stay attached very long.
You have to pay attention and get ALL the rust out of every corner of the tank.

I'd sure like to be in on the ride.  I just don't know what my distance limits are since I herniated a disc in my back.  And, I'm pretty sure a sleeping bag will cripple me these days.

Maybe I can join up in Santa Cruz and make it to San Fran.  Then, if the roads are interesting, San Fran to Vacaville-ish or even Sacramento-ish.  I don't think I'm going to make the trip on from there into Nevada.

Is there a planed route from SF yet?  Or, will that be a spontaneous endeavor? 

My 750F has an oil leak, and the gaskets were lost in delivery.  The good news, is that my boot won't rust and is quite water repellent!

May have to take one of the old reliable 550s.

Some variation of this route is looking pretty good for coordinating the handoff to Mr.Breeze for the final leg into NV. Nothing is set in stone yet. I also put another possible route on page 6. That one might be nice if more North Bay riders want to get involved. By the way, nice Townies OneWheel, that's the most popular bike I sell.

What highway is that you have on page 6 Matt? It looks like the Feather River or south of that. Too far outa my way and it would be alot longer even for you Bay Area riders. My vote is to stay with 4-49-88. Beautiful riding anywhere in the Sierras for sure!!!

I'd be more than happy to bite the bullet and install that new seat on MY bike for the ride. I'm pretty attached to the cut up yoga mat in a helmet bag saddle that currently adorns my F but I'd be willing to make the sacrifice for you guys.
You know you beat me down to Corbin by like a day right TT (shakes fist and grumbles).

I just guessed w/ google maps on a good northern route into the Sierras. I go mountain biking up in Downieville a lot and I'm always jealous of the guys on motorbikes tearing up those roads. I thought it might be a good excuse to get up there myself but it does look like that southern route will be more practical, especially in light of the two days of riding I have planned immediately before it.

That's definitely a beautiful ride...the only suggestion I would make is, depending on if you have the time or not, it would only add maybe an hour to an hour and a half to go around the west side of Tahoe rather than the east. It's much more scenic, plus the added visuals of being in the lane next to the lake rather than looking across the oncoming traffic, and there's a rather long stretch, near the Kiingsbury grade area when you go around the east side, where you're not even next to the lake..oh yeah..more twisties on the west side too...
