What kind of gas milage are you all getting out of your 550s?
« on: December 22, 2010, 10:02:13 AM »
I have found the gas tank of my current dreams, and somehow I'm determined to get it on the bike.  She's a cute little monkey, but a little short on capacity, as I've noticed monkeys often are.  I looked up its specifications and at 2.4 gallons she's as small as she looks.

My Harley (1,450cc) gets right at 45 miles per gallon no matter how I ride it.  My wife's bike (883cc) gets over 50mpg, but she rides like a gray old ape, and you know how they can be.  I haven't owned a Honda 4 since 1971 (750 K1) but as I recall it got about 50 mpg too, so that's sort of what I was expecting from the 550 I'm building now.  But I did a search here and elsewhere and I'm seeing all sorts of postings from guys who are getting abysmal fuel economy.  A bunch of them I was chalking up to overflowing carbs the rider's weren't aware off, some of them might have been poor because the owner's drive like New Jersy-trained Baboons, but then there were comments from fellows who seemed reasonable and had good running bikes who weren't getting very good milage either.

So I thought I'd come here and ask.  What kind of milage are you getting and if you don't mind, how does your bike run and how do you ride it?  Me, I go zoom, zoom, zoom most all the time. ;D

I'll let you know this coming spring Kong! Right now my tank is in the basement, the bike is under cover and the weather sucks. I haven't been through a whole tank yet. I plan on going through as many as I can this spring.  :D

Have not checked mine, but have heard it can vary greatly, 20-50 mpg.

Admittedly, mine is not in perfect tune, but I've been getting in the 30's.  That's cruising around at 60-70 and occasionally rolling it up to max.  Also taking off from stops with snap, so I know I'm not getting the most economy, but I'm having fun!
I bet with proper tune I'll avg over 40.

I get mid 30s with mixed riding last I checked.  I have noticed that mileage goes down significantly when riding above 70mph for extended periods (like on the open interstate).

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

I have 2 I am playing with.

the 74 k all stock, got close to 50 MPH ran very well but the performance was poor compared to my 76 F. I burnt a piston in the F  on a long trip, 74 was a part getting a upper end treatment so the 74 motor went in the 76.

with a ported head,
after market muffler on stock 4 into 1,
ignition upgrade,
40/115 jets in 022 carbs,
 open air box

it runs very well, the plug chops look good, it may be just a touch rich at idol but after burning a piston I'll leave it that way. I can get close to 40 but it is usually around 36 MPG.

I had a 1000r that would get 50MPG if you stayed off the 160 main jets, but  riding it hard it could drop as low as 12-15 MPG, but man was it fun ;D
