honda 400f engine oil leak
« on: March 18, 2006, 03:14:17 PM »
New to here but have tried searching but haven't found

Have rebuilt a 1976 400f engine that had an oil leak that came along the front fins of the engine.

Replaced the head gasket etc but the oil leak is still there and if anything worse.  Doesn't seem to be comming from the gasket and looks to be below that, at the back of the engine.  My thoughts are that it may be comming from the 2 central studs and running through the air vents, pretty oily.

Has anyone got any ideas or fixes before I strip it back down again.

Any help appreciated

I got out my CB400 manual , did you refit the oil restrictors with new 'o' rings? The usual cause of oiul leaks is the feed to cam bearings. for some reason the 400 doesnt leak out the side like 500/550 but along the front.
the other place is the cam chain tunnel ( I have seen gaskets put on backwards!!) Did you check head for distortion? If it aint reasonably flat it wont seal. There are special washers with rubber insrerts on a couple of studs (Unless they are perfect toss them and fit copper washers) if they are in the wrong place oil leaks down the studs and you need the dome headed nuts. All I can think of at moment

Thanks for the reply.

Have changed the full set of gaskets an oil seals and am know thinking that the oil leak is comming from the two central studs, with oil leaking between the head and the copper washers.

Just wondering if any one else has had a similar problem.

Will check out the head when I strip it down again!!

Cheers
