handlebars that won't tighten up and rear shock question
« on: March 18, 2006, 12:40:40 PM »
the handlebars on my 72 CB350f have play between the top triple tree and the bar mounts. there is a rubber piece that attaches below the bar mounts that might serve as a way to limit vibration. it annoys me that the bars pitch forward when braking and despite my best efforts not tightening of the bar mounting bolts will pull out the slack. any suggestions? what role do those rubber bushings play, I'd guess they are just a way to limit mirror vibrations?

also, atop both of my rear shocks are cylinders that cover the top half of suspension springs, they look like a cover for the springs. how hard are they to remove? i don't like the look of them but if I do remove them i don't have a way to compress the spring to reinstall it. even at the smallest level of preload i don't know that i could put the spring back into place after removing it. any tips, advice or experience is appreciated...

Hmmm... The handlebars on my '74 350f are solid mounted. They must have made a change along the way. Maybe a '74 top clamp would solve your problem. As for shocks, I'd really recomend some replacements. I bought a set from Tim the shock guy along with lots of others and the difference is huge. $60 for the set incl. shipping. I've got his email addy if you'd like it.

Someone's been messing with your bike mate, I restored a 1972 CB350F and don't remember any rubber vibration damper thingy, and a CB350F doesn't vibrate anyway, you may need a new top triple, or "shim" the bars. Here's a link to Tim's excellent $50.00 Boge shock auction, they're great, I bought 5 pairs!

Cheers, Terry. ;D

CB350 twin has rubber mounted bars. Tighten until the nuts strip but you wont stop the movement. you need to remove the nuts &washers holding clamps to top yoke, have a look at the stepped area and find a couple of flat washers that fit over it to compress the rubbers a bit further. you need 12mm inside hole (half inch) and 7/8" will work for the outside diameter( its about 23mm)

thanks crazypj, i noticed that the bushings were not completely sitting within the yokes. i was worried that by just continuing to tighten the bolts they could shear the bolts under heavy braking. the washers are dished on the ends so i would guess that i would place the shim below the dished washers and right next to the bolt and the handlebar mount. i couldn't get the bushing to compress anymore but i think that the washers will do the trick...thanks

So is it an obese twin (boat anchor) or a beautiful little SOHC 4? Man, I'm so confused.....................  ???
