I had my cb750k2 on the center stand yesterday to wash it and discovered that the rear wheel had about an inch of side to side play.  I looked a little closer and it is the spokes that are loose.

I decided to bring it to someone to tighten and true the wheel but they are telliong me that I probably need new spokes because the nipple are probably siezed on the spokes since the wheel is 33 years old...  IS THIS NECESSARILY TRUE?

They say they will only charge $65 lace a wheel from scatch...  I haven't  priced new spokes and a rim yet....

If it were just tightening a couple loose spokes I would do it myself, but with the whole wheel moving around I want it aligned professionally.

I think I will call Charlie's place in SF next and see if I can bring it to them to fix.

Also, why might a wheel all of a sudden go so loose int he spokes?

When I had the rear tire replaced a few months ago it was fine.

I can't believe I just rode 80miles up the coast on that wheel!

Thanks for reminding me, they say you should, as part of a routine check, go around each wheel with a screw driver or something to check the sound tone of each spoke. I haven't done it in about a year.  :-[
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

You want to check the spoke holes in the hub ( well you probably DONT want to check them but you have to) They may well be worn oval if the spokes are that loose. May even need a new hub if your really unlucky, as it can crack when you tighten them up.

If you know the shop that priced the lacing for you{up here in the northeast,
65.oo isn't a bad price} And you aren't sure of doing it.Have them inspect it, Much Much better to be
safe. If it broke going down the road....................!!!!!!

$65 sounds a good price indeed. You're bound to need new spokes, but might get away with the rim - let them decide that, they can inspect it properly after they've cut the old spokes off it. Oh, don't ride it meanwhile, with the spokes slack all the forces are no longer spread by them & it'll collapse pretty soon. As for why it went, by any chance is there one spoke that's broken? Once one goes the rest soon give in.

I just dropped it off at a shop in SF that specializes in old honda's.  Its called Charlie's place.

I want to be sure that someone who knows these bikes checks it out and advises me on what actually needs doing....

As loose as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if it was toast.

I have a nice rear wheel in storage in AZ...   >:(

My partner and I have a pickup and the bike... so it would be helpful to be able to get it back on the road now that I am graduating and may be starting a new job at a resort in Napa.

Thanks for reminding me, they say you should, as part of a routine check, go around each wheel with a screw driver or something to check the sound tone of each spoke. I haven't done it in about a year. :-[

Glad to be of service  ;D

  • Shut up when you're talkin' to me!!
Hey Adam, glad to hear you caught your wheel problem before it caught you!! Now you have me wondering about mine although I just had a new tire mounted & balanced last spring in San Jose and all was OK.I am planning on getting a new front tire real soon before the riding season starts. The tire has good tread still but it is a cheap #$%* brand and I am mostly worried about the tube in it as it has never been replaced since I have owned the bike(2000).So if you are going to go to work in Napa,I might hook up with you to ride soon.I was just in Suisun City this weekend visiting my friend with the new Beemer. He said he was up for the coast trips (Point Reyes, etc.) We are actually planning on a few days trip/stay in Yosimite this summer.Anyhoe, keep in touch and get that wheel fixed!!! Let me know the details on the damage, probable cause, and cost!!!Talk to ya later,MrBreeze

This thread brings up a question I've been curious about:

What's involved in relacing a wheel? I've got a spare wheel with badly rusted spokes and I just picked up a new set of spokes, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about the project. Is it really difficult?

Search on "Lacing" or "wheel lacing" and see what other members have said about doing this yourself.

Personally, I'd send mine out and get them done professionally.
