help in identifing forks
« on: December 29, 2010, 07:56:27 PM »
hi, i have a set of forks on a cafe cb750 that i am tyring to find what year and model they are from. the lower outer tubes are black, no fork gaitors but do have dust seals, near the top outside of both lowers is a threaded stub (about 1/2" long-possibly for reflector), also has several ribs machined into lower tubes (right below the dust seal and run around the circumference of the tubes)..thx in advance, joe

IS that from a DOHC 750 or  SOHC? The DOHCs had black legs.
13 in the garage and counting...

wish i knew- this was an incomplete buildup of a cafe bike and i am trying to finish it......the upper tubes are 39 mm and have aircaps with cross over hose. the caliper mounts look the same except of course one is lh and one rh. axle caps on both too....the stubs sticking out from the upper sides of the lower tubes(reflector mounts???) should be a dead giveaway but i have had no luck with photos or parts books.

I think only the DOHC supersports had the black legs.

77/78 F has forks as you describe, but they are 35mm, so yours are probably later ones. All sohc 750 have 35mm forks.

They sound like the later CBX forks.
39mm tubes and a nub for a screw on reflector.

Re: help in identifing forks-rotor diameter
« Reply #6 on: December 30, 2010, 03:10:48 AM »
thanks to all for the help....looking at photos of the cbx it looks to be the correct forks......the p.o. has dual cb750 disc's which are too big in diameter using the cbx forks/calipers(calipers were not mounted on bike when bought) so now i need to find out the cbx brake rotor diameter so i can machine these down as it is a little hard to measure/size how much to remove and finding the stock diameter would be the easiest way to go...........thanks again.happy riding in the new year- ride safe, have fun... joe

The triple trees that came with your project, are they for a CBX? ie: 39mm

yes....i had to grind stock cb750 stem stops, remove some material from the raised fwd stem seam, make/weld stops on the lower stem- now i just need  80's cbx brake rotor diameter and then to the lathe to cut down...thanks,joe

I'm assuming that you would be cutting down the CB discs to keep the spoked wheel for the CBX forks.

I don't have the diameter of the CBX discs but "usually" when cutting down the outer diameter of the disc, you can run into the problem of once the disc is cut down to the needed size, the caliper won't fit because the caliper will now hit the disc carrier. You would also need to find out the offset of both of the discs to see if they are compatible with each other.

You would also need to make up some axle spacers to center the CB wheel in the CBX forks.

It may be easier to find a DOHC spoked wheel (for 5 bolt brake discs) and use it with the CBX discs. If you are using the Comstars, just get the CBX wheel.
