older chevy guys
« on: December 29, 2010, 11:34:57 PM »
any small block gurus here?can a 307 block, with 307 pistons, use a 350 crank with 400 rods?,the 400 rods are shorter,i know the 307/327/350 block are more or less the same, the 350 crank would cause the pistons to hit the head with the stock rods and 307 pistons, but with the 400 rods i think its ok??so a bored to 4 inch 307,with a 350 crank and 400 rods will work, itll be a 350 cid then, with a 307 engine number.

...a bored to 4 inch 307,...

don't know about the crank/rods part but I'm pretty sure a 307 block doesn't have enough iron to handle a 1/8" overbore.

I wouldn't call myself a guru, but I believe the 307 is a totally different animal compared to the 305, which is basically just a destroked 350.

the 305 will not compute here thanks fastbroshi, the 305 will have crank clearance and bore  issues, the 307 will go four inches ok,its the plus .20 they might not handle, for example a 327 block(four inch) will go the plus .20 from the stock four inch, its the compression height once the longer stroke(3.48)350 crank is used, the 307 stroke is 3.25,will the shorter 400 rods work?i used to have an old book,"how to hot rod small block chevs"and im sure thats the combo,i still have some old "smoky yunicks"books, but the parts swapping isnt covered.

That's right, my friend had a '77 Nova with that motor, so I started reading a bit to see what we could do.  Besides a different carb or exhaust tweaks, it would be hard compared to a 350 for sure.

MODERATORS!!KILL WARDENERD!i like the windsor engine, even though the clevo has better valve gear and bearings, and oil supply,i built a 351 windsor about 94 for a mate,as a tow motor, man it went well, same towing as if unloaded, the cam was a sig erson tq20 hydraulic, just a holley 600 on a performer, this thing was a heavy car,an xy fairmont station wagon,it span the wheels easy,i like fords, towing two bikes we easily out traffic light dragged a smokey xbgt,im guessing a 302 clevo up a steep hill.

i wasnt there but some mates tricked greg by saying hed been seen doing burnouts and had to clean them off the road, after he tried to clean them up they told him the truth, wish i was there for that one,the white wagon is a 302 fairmont.ignore the lower photo, thats how i received the scanned email, this is about,a long time ago.

A 307 is a 283 block with a 327 crank, and a 302 is a 327 block with a 283 crank. a 305 is POS >:(

the 307 is a great engine,it only needs a four barrel to open it up,they all came with a two.
