CB550...Was running, now won't start
« on: March 19, 2006, 07:50:34 PM »
This is my 2nd post on a 77 CB550 that sat for 2 years.  Cleaned idle jets as suggested and got it running...rode 20 miles to the Honda shop and got it inspected.  Next day it started fine, but was stalling, so I started messing with the idle speed adjustment.  Today it's gone from racing to now it won't start.  I can get it to cough a few times by giving it full throttle, but that's it.  Suggestions on where to go from here?

Thanks....

Any tuneup history?  Did you follow the owners manual checklist?

Have you looked at the spark plug deposits?

Even clean carbs won't stay working if fed from rusty, scaley, dirty fuel tank.

Drain each carb bowl into a clean container.  Examine the drainage.  Any bits larger than .015 inch can block the idle jets and give symptoms you describe.

Over 90% that the pilot jets are partialy or fully blocked. They are pressed in but can be removed with CAREFUL use of "Vise Grips" using a pulling and twisting motion BE CAREFULL as you cant buy replacements
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Fuel off bottom of carbs looks clean as does visual of gas tank.  I have it running again, but still stalling if I don't keep it choked.  I have replaced plugs and will be replacing points & condensers in the next few days.  Feels like I may have to inspect idle jets again if I can't find anything else.  I'm getting proficient at getting the carbs in & out.
Thanks again for the help.

If it Runs with the choke on, and quits with it off,
sounds like crud in the idle circuit{slo jets}. one other thing.......
Check that all your carb boots are tight, and not leaking
or cracked. if they leak it will race with the choke on, and
stall as soon as you open it.
         hope it helps
