This Is What's Kept My Mind Preoccupied "Updated w/ more pics"
« on: December 28, 2010, 07:07:18 AM »

Yep, it AIN'T Pretty (yet) but here it is:

Now, at the moment, this little truck has the 2.5 4cylinder/5sp and THAT will be removed, to make room for a more worthy powerplant (the KEY word being "POWER")

Does THIS give a hint as to what is going to be going in there?  ???

Let me say THIS, There will be NO lack of power.  ;D

I hear ya Alan. I have gotten to be a pretty good browser on Craig's List and I had found the '92 Dakota and wanted to build one with a 360 w/ a carb and a 727 trans. I've seen several of these online on another forum. I've also chatted with a few owners too and found that they are pretty good runners and not that difficult to do. But, being a fancier of the Big Blocks, I wasn't totally into it. Then I started talking with a fellow who knows of one of those Dakotas w/ a 440 in there. Well, that's all it took. So, I start looking for 440s w/a 727 trans. and found several. I was skimming through what I had found and was going to decide on which to go check out, when I saw a "440 6pk shortblock w/ low miles and wear , "Easy rebuild" and had heads and stuff to go with it. Then, the fellow on the forum, sent me the link to THAT intake.
So, I made contact with the guy with the shortblock (who, I forgot to mention) coincidentally was a fellow I had done some business with for parts for the GTX earlier this year and is only about 30 - 45 minutes away. I told him I was after the shortbock and hoped to get the rest of what I needed, later as I could. He let me know that, being at the end of the year, he's spent a bunch on Christmas and needed to turn some cash and would create a package deal on what I needed from him. And he did. So, I'm working on putting that 440 together (after head work, a hone job, rings and bearings), get the trans rebuilt and scrounge up the money for the conversion mounts and oil pan kit. I am also looking for a differential to handle it And gonna lower the truck around 3 - 4" (keeping an eye on that oil pan. Also will work toward putting the power to the truck, w/o burning up the tires. So, there ya are. Progress and pictures as I make it.  ;)

Will this be for the street and track?  Or strictly track?  Will it have a trans-brake?

Well, it's for the Street mostly. Now, IF it turns out like I hope it does, I may try it at the track. So far, I have never been to the track except a few times as a spectator. But, If I can get this truck to run as good as my GTX AND manage to get to where I can get it down the track respectfully, then I just might be able to do some good with this. I don't expect to blow away the competition right away. But, it WOULD be nice to
give them something to deal with. :D  To be quite honest, I hadn't even thought of the Trans brake. I HAD thought of a Line Loc. Which would be best? If memory serves me correctly, the trans brake allows the engine to Load" the trans and "DUMPS" that load to the rear end  when released. Then the re's the "Line Loc" doesn't that just lock the front brakes to help hold you in place, til it's time to go? As you can tell, I've never had any experience with either and only know what I've read or been told. No doubt, I've got a lot to learn.

You're ahead of me.  I only know what I see on Pinks All Out.  I don't know what a "Line Loc" is. :P

Basically, it is a means of locking the front brakes so you can smoke the rear tires. With one installed, you simply apply the brakes, engage the Line Loc and then release the brake pedal. The rear brakes release and the front brakes don't Now, you are free to smoke the rear tires and when you are ready, you can release the front brakes too.

saw a pretty ironic showing of "Pinks All Out", a day or 2 ago. When it came down to 4 cars, there was a '68 road runner, a '65 Belvedere (I think it was a Belvedere), a Camaro and another Chevy (don't remember if it was a Chevelle, Nove or what). Anyway, the GMs barely put the Mopars away, but they did it.  Then one GM sprung a leak with his brake system, during the runoff between the 2 GM cars (he was disqualified). All the Camaro had to do was to made a solo run and claim the $10,000. He screwed up and Jumped the start and HE was disqualified. So, Rich brought out the 2 Mopars the the GM cars had eliminated and the '68 road runner "Walked the Dog" and won the race! Strange turn of events, eh?  ???

Very cool project, look forward to seeing it when its done.

I have been having a craving for something more powerful as well. I have decided when I get the money to get a Dodge Magnum SRT-8 only problem is, they dont fare so well in 8" of snow.

I hear THAT. Did you know that, IF you could FIND ONE, unless I'm mistaken, I think they did make the SRT8 in the AllWheelDrive version. That would Help.  :D

8" IS a pretty good Obstacle to overcome. HEY, if you could come up with the bucks, how bout an STR10 Ram Truck?  ???  ;)

Seems like my BIGGEST drawback is gonna be to try to find a lower price (if there IS such a thing) on the carbs. Now, I'm not trying to build a "Replica" of the 440 6pk, SO, if I can come up with a suitable set of carbs, I'll be happy.. If NOT, the Aluminum 6pk Intake could end up being "Art Work".  :(

Shoot, Bill, I figured it was going to be a 440 even before I saw the manifold. ;) Keep your eyes open for Holley 2 bbls; they used to be fairly common in 250 and 350 CFM versions. They were even marketed for VWs as "Bug-Spray" carbs.

Any thoughts of getting involved with the upcoming SOHC relay? We need folks to carry the "torch" from AR to OK.

Well, I guess my user name MIGHT have given the "440" part away, BUT, in the beginning, I WAS looking to do a 360 though. I've seen some pretty hot 360s around. I'm working on the carb part now and hope to resolve it before TOO long.

I Have been asked about the SOHC Relay, but honestly don't have a SOHC bike ready for that. Best thing I have going right now, is the CBX (too new, too many cylinders and too many cc's). My Days are pretty stretched too, with working with a Special Needs young man as well. I would be Honored to be able to take part in that and represent the SOHC4 cause. But, as it stands right now, I don't see how I can. I hate to let you all down like that too.

Thanks for THAT Scott, it's just that it feels GOOD to be asked (been asked by 2 or 3 folks) and makes me feel bad that I can't participate, you know? The SOHC4, as a whole, has been very good to me I feel as I personally know a number of you all, as Really Good Friends.  ;)

Thought I might up date this a bit and show what arrived via USPS & UPS, a few days ago. Might call them "Inspirational Pieces"!  ;D  Ting is, IF for some reason that the Dakota build (for some reason) doesn't make it, I've ALWAYS got the '69 GTX that I COULD put it on and get me one of those 6 pk hoods!  8) I don't know of any reason that I can't make the Dakota happen though. Just a thought, as a backup plan.  ;)

Personally, I think they are pretty cool, just to look at.  :)
