Bottom End Rebuild - Shifting

I'm about to torque down my case bolts, but I'm having some shifting woes,
maybe? Spinning the main drive shaft by hand while shifting- often the tranny
only half shifts- it gets stuck or stops halfway between gears. It usually
shifts properly, maybe 1 out of 10 fail. I'm thinking that it's something that's
happening only because the motor isn't spinning very fast by hand? Thoughts?

Note- tranny gears are in excellent shape. I picked the best of 6 shift forks
that have some wear, but none in the middle, no blueing, and no bends. Only on
the nubs on the bottom.

Possibility that is normal as you probably do not have enough momentum in the trans by hand spinning. Are you positive all is together correctly?  ...Larry

Pretty sure. I don't think that it would shift through all the gears if anything was in the wrong place. Going back out to reinspect, anyway.

Shifting through the gears, watching them, with the cases split, everything is working fine.
When I had the cases split and the transmission only "half shifted" I was able
to see why - the nubs on the sides of the gears (not sure of the correct term)
were not always lining up and being pushed into the holes of the facing gears.
When there are actually some RPMs going through the gears this won't be a
problem. Does that make sense? Hope so.

I ran out of gas in my propane heater before I could get much further than that. Went and got it refilled, but I can't get myself back out there tonight. I need to get some Yamabond before I can button up the cases, anyway.

Both shafts need to be turning to get decent shifts, one reason its so hard to get neutral from anything other than 1st or 2nd
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!
