seeking 750 info
« on: December 29, 2010, 02:53:46 AM »
I am thinking about moving up from the 350f simplicity of reasonably knowing the manufacture date of the bike by the key being under the tank or on the triple trees, and few other changes if any in the series.

I am shopping for a 750 and as it is now, shopping is usually  done one bike at a time, not on a showroom wih several selections.

Here's what I know of 750:

Many bikes were titled long after their date of manufcture.

It's  a bike that might be manufactured in 1973.

Honda Chopper tells me this about:

CB750E-2200001   new cylinder head, new valve guide seals, improved oil passages to camshaft, new piston rings (three part oil scavenge rings), new cam chain guide, larger piston pin circlips, new final drive shaft, new sprocket cover
CB750E-2228679   new cylinder head, new valve guides, new valve guide seals, no more rubbers between fins

What other useful information should I know when I go to look at the bike?

Consider parts availability,bolt-up interchangeability/ usable with modification parts and general  desireability of the possible model,  without  knowing the actual manufacture date. Or in general what do I look for besides rubber between the fins that may or may not still be there?

Thanks~

 3 main "K"inds to look for;
 listed in order of desireability..
Early.. 69 and KO's, fat slotted sidecovers, plastic guages. Narrow stripe tank, ducktail seat,  free flowing 4-4 pipes

Mid.. 71 & 72...  smaller sidecovers, metal guages (band mount), Narrow stripe tanks, all have 4-4 pipes, the 71 is last of the free flowing pipes..

Later 73-76.. smaller sidecovers, metal guages (bottom mount) Fat Stripe tank, newer style forks, fender on front rotor, the plainest of seats, 4-4  less free flowing pipes.

Then there are some F models, and the last run 77/78 K models, more changes, less resemblance to the 76 and down models

If and when I get it, make it as dependable a running machine as economically as possible keeping it as stock as possible, ride the piss out of it and go from there as far as what to make of it.

Pristine restoration is not in the budget yet, but I do have access to machining.

From what I can tell this one has no stripe on the tank.

On the other hand, if I get a good price, maybe I'll just part it out for beer money. 'nyuk! 'nyuk!

I don't get this concern over manufacturing date unless you're one of these motorcycle nerds who obsess over whether it has 9 or 10 screws on the muffler belt cover or whether the seat has a camel toe or not.  Find one in nice shape at the right price that speaks to you and buy it.  Hint: Get a 75/6 F they are the best. ;D ;D ;D

I hear you on obsessing on details, and  like I said, you pretty much get a choice of one bike at a time when shopping, so waiting on a '76 or other model in particular could take a while.  I think this one will do fine if I can swing it.  I figure it will be a bit of a tear down, hopefully I don't have to split the cases.

Serial numbers will always define the exact model in question, then you can follow up with the manufacture date and title date. The first step in shopping for a vintage CB750 is to have reference material in hand to make a 100% positive ID of the bike. A quick and easy online source can be found here:

750 A models:

The Honda Motorcycle ID guide is a great source of reference as it covers the bikes Honda sold in the USA.
