Fork Oil leak...special washer?
« on: December 29, 2010, 12:59:50 PM »
 '71 CB500.

I have all the stuff to do fork seals, wheel bearings and steering bearings this Winter. I've noticed a leak from the bottom of the left fork. Looking at the parts fiche, it shows a "special washer" under the socket bolt on the bottom of the fork.

WASHER, SPECIAL (8MM)

What's so "special" about this washer? Is it something I'll be able to find/replace?

Curious as well.

I used a rubber "o" ring and it seems to be working better than the copper one I tried.

It's copper. It's "special" in that it keeps the oil from coming out.   ;D  It will give like a crush washer and seal it up.

I don't think you could get the proper amount of torque back on that bolt with a rubber ORing under it, you'd destroy the Oring.

Copper, eh? Cool...I have an assortment of copper washers. Shouldn't be a problem, then.

They may be special in dimension also. IIRC, they need to fit tight around the bolt, 8mm,  and not have an oversize OD as it fits down in a pocket.

Just buy the damn honda part, it doesn't cost that much and I'll guarantee you it won't leak for another 20 years or more.
