WTF! Who in their right mind would spend that kind of money on a wedding?

My son got married one week before Christmas, in a courthouse with a Judge. Spent the money for the license and the Judge fee which was under $100. Even my daughter-in-law kept the expenses low. She wanted a dress she owned shipped from Canada. But after finding out how much it was going to cost, she went to Good Will and found a similar white dress and paid only $3.95! And it looked great!

You got to love that...

Hmmm.
If she was spending like that before she was married, maybe not hard to see why he backed out?
Sounds like SD750F raised his son right.
Couples these days need all the funds they can get to set up together.
Most of those people at the expensive party/wedding they won't even know in 30 years, if they are still together.

Eff me man.  She wanted all that stuff, and now she expects someone else to pay for it.  I just don't get it.  I don't get how people can think that way.   :-\

We got married in a Church one Friday night. Her in a really sharp white dress that she'd picked up on, me in my leisure suit, the preacher, his wife, Brenda's immediate family and Mine. Prim and Proper. Didn't take long to do (back in Jan 1971) and it lasted til July of last year. Never any doubts or regrets from either of us.

Wife and I paid for our own wedding.  Her parents wanted no part of it.  My folks paid for the booze and pop. My aunt made the floral arrangements.  We took care of everything else.  Her folks just showed up at the church.  A good time was had by all.  We are still happy and independent after 38 1/2 years.
Daughter wanted to get married a few years back.  We were not sure so we said they could pay and we would reimburse after the wedding.  Turns out the wedding plans fell through and they lost their deposits on the chapel and hall (after we told them to call early, so others could book the dates).  They later went to Ohio and got married at Toledo City Hall.  Didn't cost us anything.

Yeah, I was the same after 27 years (sans children) then a friend of mine had a severe brain hemorrhage and was left brain dead, his partner and children wanted the machine switched off but his catholic family were against it. Wanted to keep him going in a vegetable state. All sorts of shenanigans ensued. Finally they all saw sense asked the 2 daughters their wishes who instructed the doctors to let him go.
So I thought I'd rather my now wife make that decision, rather my alcoholic drugged up sister who was my sole next of kin at the time.
Furthermore what with all the bureaucracy here in Europe, it would be easier for my wife to collect my pensions and life assurance payouts as my spouse after I go.

Yeah, there are two culprits in this mess.  You can't tell me he had no idea on what was being spent.  Who knows maybe some of it was his idea.  Split it 50-50 and move on.  If they were people in higher income brackets it's not unusual to spend 100K or more on a wedding.  May seem outlandish to those in the middle class.  We got married in our backyard with family and friends and then had a big reception for 200 in a tent in the park/woods across the street and it came to $4500.  Food was superb but expensive, not the usual ham sandwich and yellow potato salad crap, kegs of beer and root beer.  A great time was had and the relatives still talk about it.  Well worth it.

We have laws to deal with this kind of thing, still i suppose any disgruntled relative could still throw a spanner in the works....
Funny thing is, I have seen people and their relationships change after getting married and usually for the worse, no other change except the wedding......My parents had 6 kids in 12 years and then got a messy divorce, marriage never appealed to me from then on..

Agree there's probably a lot more to the story.
It does sound like she went a bit nuts spending though.

Well, what about the engagement ring?  Probably a good 5k or more.  He should get that back at least.  The dress can be sold for about half the cost, so that helps.

But I think she should be reimbursed for 50% or more.  If he agreed to it, he knew what he was doing.  He was engaged for 3+ years.  If he just manned up earlier, she would have gotten her money back on a lot of bigger items - the orchestra and the hall mostly as long as they were able to re-book.

And believe me her expenses were on the low side for a lot of marriages in big cities.  I used to date someone who worked in the industry.  The prices are outrageous in places like Chicago, NY, Boston, Miami, LA etc. for everything wedding related.

They may do it differently down under but here in the States wife swapping parties trade partners for sexual activities not yard implements. ;D ;D ;D

This whole wedding thing is crap, how many are princesses, virgins or going to influence the growing season? Does it mean that if zillion of dollars are spent she's a better lay or that he's a captain of industry? A prince or the chief medicine man in charge of the harvest? I don't understand it, spectacle, Why? Haven't we gotten past the old peasant thing where the powerful over awe us with spectacle so that we can touch our brows to them and be good little serfs? I would think that all the people should point their fingers at thinks like that and yell stupid, I was part of a big wedding (unwilling part of it) and do I remember it, no the only things I remember were the Piper getting horrendously drunk and falling over, one of my friends chasing
all good looking young things with my electric tooth brush, bellowing maniacally "yes indeed my dear I've found a new perversion" and my father in law #$%*ing at me for years about all the money that was spent, when neither my wife or I wanted any thing but a small wedding (about 20 people) and did this wedding do anything for us, No! Forty plus years have past and we are still together despite the wedding and the dull duo that this thread was about aren't even together. What total Bull #$%*.

Mate of mine announced his engagement to his long time girlfriend. They both announced that they wished for a small intimate ceremony with nearest and dearest only attending. Well, you'da thought the fcuking 3rd world war had erupted both sets of parents trying to outdo each other in the spending and organising stakes. After a month of arguments, fights, sulks and tears he and his missus said fukkit, called the whole thing off, jumped on a plane to Las Vegas with his best man and her best friend, booked in to the Little White Chapel and got married there and had a few laughs on the holiday after. Finished, kaboom. Spent about £2500 all in.
Her set of parents wouldn't talk to them for about 2 years, but his family said well done mate, way to go.
