« on: December 29, 2010, 09:06:56 PM »

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/mcy/2133827320.html
and i got this reply

Would you consider trading for a 30 gal. upright compressor, craftsman 6.75HP 2350PSI pressure washer, a snap-on Blue point top box with some tools, and a two drawer storage cabinet. Just a few of the tools include a blue point impact gun several other impact tools a HVLP paint gun, a radiator pressure tester, small airbrush compressor and airbrush and misc. mechanic tools, and a small 90 amp gasless mig welder.
Let me know. Thanks Keith

... what would you do? i am interested in atleast the mig and the compressor.. prob the paint gun... would this mig need 220? i dont know what kind of amprege 90 is for welding is that a lot alittle? most of my interest for welding is bike related and possible building

I would pass, the most he is offering is $ 350.00 in trade (provided all the bits are in good condition).

Doesn't sound so bad to me if you need those things. Check to see if they are quality or cheap throwaway tools.

we have different voltages here, our normal domestic is 240,our heavy duty is 415 volts like for welders and high speed compressors,do the lesser voltage american types of equipment cost less in this case?like less windings so less copper?im with Don R,are the other tools cheap?sounds tempting if its all clean and low usage?

Do your homework, go online, check out how much all these would cost you new, deduct 40% off the new price for a reasonable 2nd hand price and compare the price against your bike.

Nothing against Tom's feeling on this, but I agree with these guys, Good thoughts here.  Check out the stuff online and then in person, the Snap On Box is usually pretty costly too.  Good luck with your decision too.

           Nice bike BTW,  ;)

Just be careful if you try to sell the tools afterwards.  The person they were stolen from might try to kick your arse.  Just saying...

Personally, I'd be hesitant, not because they may be stolen, but because I'm a big fan of estate and liquidation auctions. Tools and related equipment can be had very inexpensively if you have patience. Don't expect to be able to turn around and sell that same bunch of tools for what your asking for the bike. If you really need them now, it may be a deciding factor, but with cash in hand, you have many more options. Trading for tools means pretty much all you're gonna get is ...more tools...selling for cash means new bike parts, new car parts, new video games, catching up on bills, taking the S.O. out to dinner or buying her something nice for lettin you clutter up the garage with bikes and tools....generally speaking, more options...

I sold a Subaru recently and the guy who bought initially tried to talk me into partial trade for a telescope.  If it had been an offer like yours, I would have considered it, but there is a really good chance the stuff is stolen - who gets rid of good tools anyway?  Certainly not the type of person inclined to buy an older motorcycle...  He would have to have a good story - like the tools were spares or he recently closed up a shop for me to be satisfied that I wasn't participating in someone else's pain.

The guy with the telescope didn't have a convincing story and the county work crew jacket he was wearing didn't give me comfort that the telescope was legitimately his.  He did eventually come up with the cash, but was super quick to say 'Gift' when the title agent asked, 'Cash or Gift'.

My first instinct related to trading for tools was that they might be stolen (as was mentioned many times) If they are indeed His tools, He'll likely have receipts if he's a professional mechanic/technician. Receipts would put that issue to rest in short order.

Maybe it's because I'm not a professional..but I've got a buncha tools and 0 receipts, none of them are stolen, lots I got from estate auctions and hock shops. Actually, I do have a few receipts that say "tools" with a price paid, but no description...when I used to do landscape maintenance, I worked for a guy who had a lot of tools, all legit, I worked for tools, got no receipt...maybe that's my bad, neglect or whatever, but I have a hard time thinking everyone's a thief even tho there do seem to be more and more these days. I'm not worried about buying a bike with no title, very very few actually turn out to be stolen, most stolen bikes end up as boxes of parts, or used in crimes or for joyrides and end up in police impound.

If you do end up doing the trade, and have no use for the airbrush compressor, shoot me a PM  ;D
That's what I'd like to hear.

No worries Bill. ;)

OP, just be awear some or most of these type of items and deals tend to be very one sided, in favor of the one with no money (less skin) in the transaction.

so i said..
some of the things here may be up for consideration but it would have to be a partial trade cause i do need some cash... what kind of compressor and mig... does the mig need a 220 line?.. where are you located? is there a chance i could see some of the tools? and hate to ask but got to be sure how do i know these tools arent stolen?

and he said ( and included some pics)

Well the value of everything I am offering is somewhere around $3000.00 you are only asking $1200 for the bike
Let me break down the value of everything then you can decide what you want to do from there
The compressor: Paid over $500.00 value now $250.00-$300.00
The pressure washer paid $300.00 value now $150.00-$175.00
The Snap on Blue point top box paid close to $400.00 value now $150.00-$200.00
The Welder paid $120.00 value now 100.00 it’s only about 6 months old
The snap on blue point impact paid over $300.00 value now 100.00-$150.00
The radiator pressure tester paid $250.00 value now $100.00-$150.00
All the other misc. tools combined are probable worth $800.00-$900.00
And I am being conservative on the prices.
I might be willing to put $100.00 cash in with some of the tools.

If the last one..other misc tools, look good and you need, or are far better quality than what you use.. they could be worth what you got into the bike..
Sure sounds worth taking a look..

Lots of times when you get a big lot of stuff, you can sell off a few bits, and recoup some good cash.. You will get a better feeling if you actually see this stuff..

You can verify the going prices on Ebay. Just because he says he paid x does not mean he did or that it is now worth x. Just my 2 cents.

While Ebay does seem to be the "go to" place for "auction market value", it has been my experience that even there, items are significantly more expensive than they are at an actual auction in your local area....
