HELP!

I picked up this oil cooler kit from a friend that didn't end up using it on his project.

After a struggle to get oil lines plumbed properly. I've encountered a bigger issue. The adaptor ring.. or cup or whatever you want to call it... Doesn't tighten up flush to the cases. It appears to be machined approx, 3mm to shallow. The o'ring touches the cases but doesn't press against hard enough to hold back the oil pressure.

any thoughts? Anyone have a oil cooler ring and not using it and want to let it go?

Hahaha!
That would be an interesting idea. But i doubt that'll hold back the oil pressure.

So do you mean the bolt is a fraction too long not being able to put enough pressure on the alloy round part of the adapter..?  If thats the case, why not take a little off the end of the bolt..?  Am I understanding this correctly..? The alloy plate isn't thick enough..? The bolt is bottoming out, therefore not applying enough pressure..?

Really hard to explain. I'll take photos tomorrow night.
But its like the oil cooler ring was machined to shallow.

It looks like your oil lines are preventing the ring from sliding in far enough to mate with the engine.

Actually, after another look it sure does...

At first they were. I repositioned the elbows. Now they clear the case bolt heads. But theres still a gap between the oil cooler ring and the cases. Oil still gushes out under pressure.

Couldn't you just position the elbows so that it sits in the bottom instead of on top. From how you explained the oil cooler adapter is too narrow. Could you put a washer on the bolt so that it pushes it more on the case?

I thought the same. I wondered if there is any operation issues with running the elbows on the bottom. Going to try that tonight too. But as it sits right now. The elbows are not holding the ring back. Theres still room between the elbows and the case bolt heads.

^^^This. Doesn't matter where the elbows are, the oil is under pressure.

I am not sure what type you have and this may not apply at all, but one of the oil cooler adaptors i have has a little play around the bolt and if it isn't dead centered, its leaks.

Ok. Two interesting info came in today.
One. I was reminded after forgetting, this oil cooler was for a cb550. So its depth isn't the same as whats needed for the cb650.

Looks like its a quick-ish fix.
Excuse me while I try to explain. Lol
The center on the ring needs to be machined lower 3mm. Because the center on the engine case protrudes from the motor more than the 550 did. After I machine that center out on the oil cooler ring/plate/adaptor.. Whatchya-ma-call-it.. The elbows on that plate will for sure hit the bolts on the engine case. So I'll have to run the elbows underneath. And I'll also have to get longer oil lines made to make up the distance.

Interesting. Mine is for a 550 as well and I was able to run it on a 650. I also run the elbows on the bottom and found no problems doing so.

If that is the case you either have a deeper adapter or maybe the 650 engine you have is a different year and the threaded section does not protrude as much from the engine.

Success!

Got the oil cooler plate center machined down 3mm. Now the plate sits flush with the cases and sealed.. New oil lines in place. Plumbing done. Oil in the lines and filled up the cases.

Just because there's smoke, don't mean it's broke! Looks like some leftover oil on the headers.

Once those carbs are re-dialed, Olivia is going to rip!!

Congrats, Cam.  We'll be waiting for a ride report!

Correct. Residual oil from the oil leak i had few weeks ago is still on the headers.
Need to burn it off. Lol

This was the first fire. So still lots of tuning yet to be done. Hopefully to throw the syncers on this weekend and get this #$%* dialed in. Lol

Yes. Open headers. I haven't welded the inner baffles in yet or even put the 12" reverse cone on. I'll get that done before i jump into tuning.
