Now i am not knocking anything but it won't handle that well like it is, first off you have altered the trail on the front  which depending on which way the trail went will make the front end more nervous or it will slow the steering response, then the swingarm is about 6 inches too long so it will want to push the front and will take more effort to turn in because of the longer wheelbase. When putting different forks and swingarm in you should try and keep things as close as possible to stock geometry or it will effect handling greatly. I don't want to get into a long winded discussion here but if you wish to confirm what i am saying post this in the High Performance section where the racers hang and you will find out. I am using GSXR front and back but i have had the mono shock section removed from the swingarm and shortened are having fork clamps made up to keep the front end closer to the stock set up, mine will handle well.....

But it's got 17"s with sticky rubber! ;)

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

ok so the stock swingarm is 19" center of pivot to center of the adjusment slot. the one that im using is 21" center to center.  ill get more on the front later.

Yeah, I was surprised about RR's claim of a 6" stretch.  Anyhow, it's a cool bike - once it's together and you're riding it around you'll figure out how well it works and how best to have fun on it.

I like your build a lot N&C, but I sincerely doubt that GS500 components will be a meaningful upgrade over the stock CB550 stuff.  The forks will probably be a bit less flexy, but they don't have better damping.  Also, I'd be a bit concerned about the wider/stickier rubber on 17" rims resulting in more frame flex.

With that said, I continue to watch with interest - especially curious to see how your exhaust turns out.

On those carbs, what did you do to them?  They look Awesome, obviously painted black, did you also paint the body of them?  If so, what did you use?

the main reason i swapped the suspension is because i wanted the brakes and wheels.i also wanted the triple trees. mick has already pointed out the frame flex issue and i hopefully will be able to deal with that before spring time ;D

brettster i used some "cast blast" paint on the carbs, put them in the oven to cure the paint to hopefully keep any unwanted gas from eating at the paint

I said 6 inch because if you look at the rear angled down tube on the frame i was basing that figure on the gap between the tyre and the frame support rail, a stock bike has the tyre almost inline with the frame there, there is at least a 6 inch gap in your profile shot, also the bike should have a high profile 18 inch wheel, not a low profile 17 so that also adds to the problem. Remember i said i have cut down a mono shock swingarm myself and it is still 45mm { just under 2 inches longer}, my triple tree offset is 20mm less than stock so my wheelbase is an inch longer. I don't know how you measured those swingarms because i can clearly see that the back end is way longer than stock, maybe the 17 inch wheel accentuates that. Actually i just looked at your pics again and the shock mounts are more than 2 inches forward of the original position, i would re measure, lengthening the wheelbase will make it handle slower.
Here is a picture of a stock 550, you can see where the wheel is just in front of the rear frame tube, your bike has a much longer wheelbase.

I tell you this because you mentioned throwing it through the twisties, it won't respond like a stock bike with those changes.
Ifr i were you i would have a competent welder remove the monoshock section of that arm and match it up to a stock arm or maybe even 1 inch longer.....

Doing a very unscientific pixel-counting analysis of the first two pics in this thread, it looks like the wheelbase has increased by ~6%.  That would be more than 2" but less than 6".  If stock is 57", then my rough calcs show a 4" increase.

I agree, my opinion was based on looking at those pictures and what i have done to my bike, not very scientific i must agree but it has to be longer than 2 inches, the 17 inch wheel will exaggerate the distance as well. I am not rying to talk Nick out of doing this just trying to inform of what the changes will do to his bike.....The 17 inch rims also lower the bike restricting ground clearance in corners as well.

Love the pipes coming out the back like that. Wonder if that will be a problem with heat in the summer sitting at stop signs.?

In the picture i posted you can see where the front of the wheel sits near the rear downtube under the shock mount, near the footpeg mount,  then look at your pic and you will see that there is a much bigger gap between the frame and front edge of the tyre, the 17 inch wheel has a smaller diameter and a lower profile tyre so it makes it look more pronounced ...

Well thats 3 inches over stock and you will have to add around 2 inches to that measurement because you didn't take into account the far smaller offset in the front clamps, with a standard front end that would make that arm at least 5 inches longer....roughly...
