Anybody ever have the K & N single on their CB?
« on: December 14, 2010, 11:33:18 pm »
Years ago, I purchased a K & N filter that came with a plate that bolted on the stock airbox in place of the filter and box.  I thought it worked great.   I bought one for a 550F and another for a 550K on eBay, new old stock stuff. In the plastic.

Sure was a nice setup.  Oval filter fit on flange on plate.  Had a spot for the crankcase breather too.   Like one great big pod.

I'd love to find another one.  Anyone??

Nope.  Very nice though.  What I am talking about doesn't replace the air manifold. It installs behind it, where the box for the air filter went.  Maintained a stock look, retained all the advantages of the manifold, but allowed K & N filtering through a single large filter.

K & N's can be ordered pretty much in any config (I think), so the hard part is the plate that attached to the manifold.  Not that hard though, really. Even used the stock mount points for the filter box.  Pretty slick.

Anyone even know what I am talking about?

And I guess I understand the bump from boards.  Not really.

Sorta looks like it, same idea.  Could be same one.  Wow.

Seen better days.  Thanks!  I think perhaps I might just fab one up with your pic in mind.  I'll measure my stuff up and buy some 16 gauge...

The one I had before by K & N was at least 6-8" long across the long oval dimension.  That filter seems kinda small in comparison.  Wouldn't that just restrict it??

I actually got found the gal I sold one of the bikes to years ago.  She still has it and is going to take some pics for me later.

I'll post them here if they are any good.  Thanks for all the responses though.... ;D

That just rocks.  Filter looks functional there.  Your bike?

But, as I see it, you're buying a new filter setup.  Something about a "Douche" on the side...
(Sorry, but I still laugh at that. I want one to..)

So I'll declare my confict of interest at the start. ;)  The filter setup RR linked to was the one I had made for my 550.
The thread for it is here - http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=79491.0

The problem with the K&N setup isn't the filter, you can get one with sufficent surface area.  It's that when you use the stock plenum the restiction is at the collar it attaches too.  This also creates a tuning issue because #2 & 3 are now getting a straight shot of incoming air, while 1 & 4 are partially shrouded.  Honda's work around to this shrouding was to 'bend' the 550 1 & 4 stacks towards the centre.

That K&N setup should actually work pretty well, the filter is the restriction btw if there is one. That's assuming the hole is 2.5 inches, plenty big to do the job. We use a similar setup on the RD two strokes, intake noise bothers some people, but works very well.
You know you've achieved perfection in design, not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing left to take away.
