Cleaning exhaust ports while headers are off.
« on: March 22, 2006, 09:45:54 AM »
I've been lurking about looking at posts for a while now and have appreciated all the knowledge shared within this forum . Thanks

I'm getting my headers bead blasted and repainted and wondered if there's any procedure I could use to clean out the exhaust ports. They look pretty sooty and wondered if there was a need to clean them independent of the rest of the engine or if a sooty appearance was normal and nothing to worry about.

thanks for all your help

You are going to see "soot", that is normal.

It wouldn't hurt to get in their the best you can and do
some cleaning with something like brake cleaner or something
of the sort.

Thanks ProTeal55,

I'll give them a wipe down with carb cleaner or brake cleaner before I put the headers back on. Should I worry about any cleaner getting into the cylinders?

Looking forward to spring weather. My headers should be done soon. Meanwhile I'll be working on gathering supplies for my spring tune up.
