Usually a RROD happens because of a problem with one of the chips solder coming off and it loses contact with the heatsink and overheating.

IC did a homejob repair to his and fixed his problem. There are videos and websites that can talk you through the repair if your warranty is already expired, you will need to buy a special case opener tool so you do not beat the case to #$%*, it looks like that kit did not include that tool.

Note: if you 360 is still in warranty SEND IT TO XBOX FOR THE REPAIR!!!

You will void the warranty if you crack the case open!

Ah yes.  Been there with the 360.  Recovered it with the wet towel trick and put another fan in it only to have it fail a week or so later.  I have a thread here about it somewhere...  Bought another one for Christmas (kinect)

The newer ones boxed with the kinects shouldn't have these manufacturing defects.

bad solder job... they know about it too. as i understood, the solder would break from a combo of heat and vibration from the disk drive...my roommates died in nov. for the second time in 5 years. we thought for sure it wouldnt be covered so i prepared for the solder fix, in the mean time we called xbox for #$%*s and giggles. sure as #$%* it had 2 weeks left on the warranty and he got a new one 4 weeks later... call before you crack it open!

MSoft sent me a box and fixed mine. I think now you have to pay for the box and shipping. The warranty may have expired now though, this was almost two years ago. At the price theyre at now, the bundle is a good way to go.

I went ahead and voided my extended RROD warranty to install a better and much quieter cooling fan.  The original one had gotten so loud and clanky that I couldn't use the xbox unless I had the volume way up to drown it out, and even then during quiet scenes it was still obnoxious.  Now it only makes a nice, soft hum, and runs noticeably cooler.
