The reality of the situation is that the son-in-law doesn't own the bike, has no authority to sell it and the F.I.L. was pissed at his daring to try sell it. The other sadder thing is the bike will probably sit for another 20 years, as already suggested... folks can be very frustrating.
I'm still not sure.... is the bike in your possesion yet?, or did you give him a deposit to pick it up later ?
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Cliff

Your deal may already be settled. In any event - - FWIW:

Where was the guy's Dad when "It was gonna be junked if the guy hadn't have "rescued" it? There's no evidence from ol' Dad's undying love indicated in this point!

Evidently, ol' Dad showed no interest in the bike for 20 years. (His ex would likely have wanted the bike out of her way.) So, ol' Dad wasted 20 years of NOT asking his son to "rescue" it and store if for him til later!

All of this is VERY fishy, IMHO. I'm betting someone has offered him more money OR told him he sold it too cheaply and he wants another "run" at selling it.

I admire you for your attitude and your "feelings" for ol' Dad, I really do. IF the story was verifiably TRUE, I might feel the same way. However, IMHO, it smacks of fraud, looking at it from this distance, it just doesn't "wash".

IF the story is true [?], the LEAST the son could do is to have offered you some sort of profit for letting him out of the deal. I'll bet THAT never entered his mind! Most of us here would have said "I'll give your X amount of moner to cancel the deal. Not this guy. He's evidently only looking for what HE wants! Why should there be no consideration for YOU?

Many times, over many years, I have "given my word" to buy or sell and immediately regreted it. I have even bought my way out of 2 or 3 deals - agreeably to all parties. Otherwise, I just "bellied up" and did what I said I would do - even with regret. This is how it is done! Surely, most all of us have "been there" more than once.

***Y2K had an excellent idea. Get ol' Dad to come look at the bike and tell you, in person, of his "great love" for the bike. I'll bet he doesn't even know his son sold it! But, maybe so. Just get him to tell you in person. IF he really wants the bike, he will do this. Make him come to you - legally, it is your bike!

In the end, it is obviously YOUR decision. It bothers us to see you excited about buying the bike (as we all do) and then running into such a mess. As I said, I admire your for your more-than-fair attitude.

However, it would appear that we all hate what I call "LITTLE BOY TRADES"!!!!

BTW, what kind of nut would put money in a mail box??? - - or even suggest that???

I sure wouldn't want my money in anybodys mail box OR telling me later they had but it there - after I later found it wasn't there.

Gotta be more to this than meets the eye!!!

"Title" in Canada, BC in particular is a funny thing. The government does all vehicle registration and insurance and if something sits uninsured (read registered) for an extended period, in this case 20 years,  there are certain provisions in some jurisdictions that vehicles like this can be considered abandoned. Further, it's hard to know without checking with the government if there are any actual records of this bike on file.

I spoke to my father in law last night and he made me aware of how disappointed he was that I was selling the motorcycle.  He is retiring in Penticton in the spring and indicated that if he had known that I would not do anything with the bike, he would have taken it as a project for his retirement.

See, for me this is the operative wording. The father-in-law might be disappointed but for 20 years he had no knowledge of and interest in the bike. His disappointment seems rooted in the fact that the son-in-law was going to do something with the bike, which one must assume became it was his to do with what he wished. I don't know the people and sometimes family dynamics play hell with acting correctly. It sounded like the son-in-law was acting initially like the bike was his - since it seems the father-in-law "gave" (or whatever you call it) it to him.

I think the bike was his to sell, you had a deal and for whatever reason, he's trying to back out. I'm in Victoria with a truck if you need a hand picking some of it up.

This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.
