cb550 exhaust issue on new project
« on: January 03, 2011, 07:59:25 PM »
Been riding an HD for years and always wanted a CB. Picked up a 76 cb550 on Friday For $500 and started stripping it down. It's got 11,000 on it and fires right up so far so good. Need to get new fork tubes to get the front end going but not too much to complain about I guess. So, I want a 4-1 exhaust for this thing but it doesn't seem to exist. Anyone build their own exhaust? If so what did you use for flanges/inlets? Was thinking about the stainless steel Biltwell tube kit. Great site, here's the current stable;

Good to see you here ape.  Check out this thread the guy who made the exhaust for my 750 is making a limited run for the 550.  For new fork tubes contact Frank, he is the man.  I got my tubes for my gl1000 conversion from him.

welcome, good look bike to start with.

there are a few options that show up on e bay from time to time.

I have built 1 set in the past and I am getting ready to build another set for a current project.

standard 1 1/2 exhaust pipe works but it is tight, I just had a couple sticks bent up at a local exhaust shop. made a template and had a local water jet place cut the flanges. I made the baffles out of 3/4" tubing.

First off, welcome! You got a great deal.

The 550 F models came stock with a 4 into 1 [yours is a K model].
They have the same motor, so it should fit. The stock muffler will not fit your bike without mods, but most likely you wouldn't want it.
I may have an extra header.

Nice 550 you got there.  Have you considered a MAC 4-into-1?  There are three different versions still available for the 550 (all black, black/chrome, all chrome) from bike bandit, dennis kirk, et al.  When my original Honda pipes started falling apart, I put a MAC black/chrome on that I found used on eBay.  The quality is fine, although I personally like the original 4-into-4 pipes much better and miss them, but oh well....

BTW, is that your MINI in the background?
