I'm going with the Indian being heavier as my mate has a shed full of them and they are all made of solid steel unlike our Jappers. :D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I'll 2nd what Hush said. Although I'm wondering about that. True, the Indian has a lot of steel and cast iron. But the 750 has more (features & pieces) to it than the Indian. I would THINK that the Indian would be heavier, but the more I think on it, the more I wonder?  ??? Can I take a "Middle of the Road" position?  ;D

And is this with a tank full of gas cos I'm sure the 750 would have a much bigger gas tank!

I am going to guess the Indian. Rigid frame(i am assuming) and a springer or girder front end, so I think it at least has a lighter chassis. I think the frames are probably made from similar materials... Also the aforementioned gas tank argument may be valid. Less electronics stuff... No battery, maybe? Or starter... Yeah, the Indian. When do we get to find out the correct answer?

I was thinking the CB would be lighter, but you make some points there Jared.

Ya know, I was thinking about the metal used to build the Indian, but there again, the later model bikes have more to them than the old ones (as was brought out here). I rethought the deal.

Did some quick research, several sources..  some misinfo out there..
A 1930 Four has weights listed as  385, 455, 460 lbs.. so I am inclined to think it is in the latter range.. :o

Which is not really bad  for a 1280cc  :o motorcyle... sounds a bit like a superbike to me.. The fours porked up a bit through the 30s and by 1940 with the plunger frame/full fenders was up to 560 ish..

I posted this thread due to another incedence on here of Harleys(and other American ride) must be heavy..

The HD baggers ARE heavy, but they are lighter than a Goldwing. Dyna is the lightest big twin still topping the scales @ around 700lbs I think. Sporty isn't much more than our CB750. As for other American makes... I remember pulling a swingarm off a Victory to replace a belt, much easier job than an HD btw, and thinking it was going to weigh twice as much as it did. Same with the Vrod, though that swingarm was designed by brembo I think.

Years ago, a few of my friends all weighed their bikes. The lightest was an HD CR1000; my Seeley was the next lightest at 470 pounds, if I recall correctly. (I'm guessing it had/has more HP than either the HD or the Indian! ;) )
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Yeah Frank, I found this online myself:

"a 1928 4 would weigh about 455 lb, a 1942 model ( the last year of manufacture) weighs 568 lb."

I think the 31 was before the full skirted fenders though, I don't remember, but of course the '42 at 568lbs, has the full fenders & plunger rear suspension, as mentioned. Here's a shot of the 1928 model, which weighs in at 455 lbs

I haven't found a shot of the 1931 yet, but I'm still looking, though I imagine that it looks similar to the '28.

In 30 I think the hinged fender came along, in 31 they went to Bottom mount headlight, thicker spokes, and a drum brake on the rear (changed from band)

The 101 SCOUT weighed around 390lbs, not really that bad for a 600 or 750 these days..... probably the best handling Indian ever.. They say that some riders can do a low speed figure eight on them......

I wouldn't doubt that Frank, a number of the Indian forks had the axle in the position of trailing the fork, which made it handle better. My Dad tells of a trip from Memphis to North Little Rock Arkansas, where my Granddad bet a H-D rider that he could ride further w no hands on the handlebars, than he could. Well, the bet was accepted and my Granddad collected. The 101 Scout, for those who don't know, was used by most "Wall Of Death Riders", because of the way that it handled (like Frank was talking about).
