where to get carb drain plug??
« on: March 22, 2006, 03:45:04 PM »
So, in taking my carbs off the 400/4, I somehow dropped a drain plug down a well.  Don't ask.  I still can't believe it either.  Does anyone know where to get one of these?  Can a regular metric screw be used with an o ring?  This is going to really disgust me if this totally screws up my project over this.   >:(  I can't even find a part number for them listed in anything, only the o ring.   ???  Thanks.  Sorry for many questions today.

I've had good luck ordering with these guys --> http://www.crotchrocket.com/fiche_select.asp

Besides, I use their parts fiche so damn much, I feel obliged to pump some business for them; heaven help me if they pulled it from their site.

Hmmm.  I scanned a couple of years and I see your point.  It shows on the diagram, but not listed separately.  It appears you can get one if you want to drop $45 for a single bowl set (yup, just for one screw!).  Did you try calling your local Honda dealer ($$, gulp.)?  I suspect as long as you slap on an o-ring, any screw that would fit would be OK.  Just put it on an inner bowl where you can't see it.

76.  I haven't called the dealer yet, as I honestly seem to know more by reading through here, and manuals than they do.  I went to get an oil filter for my CM400, and they said that it (the bike) didn't exist.  Derrrrhhh.   ::)  I am gonna go to Ace Hardware with another screw, and see if I can match it.  Hopefully that will work.  The originals have a hole through them for easier drainage down the tube, but I could care less about that.

Just curious, did the 400's have true "o" rings on these screws? My 750 has sealing washers. Lost one and tried an "O" ring but there is a radius under the screw head that tended to spread the "o" ring. The radius was intended to center the correct washer I think.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

junkyard is where i got 2 screws for mine. but, yes, the right size gasket will work as well.  its the beveled tip that you want to make sure is nice and smoothe and not pitted or misshapen.

Mine has o rings.  Also, they are not beveled like the CM400, if you are saying what I think.  These are just blunt on the end.

Well, it is a "standard" metric thread... but it's 6mm x 0.75mm pitch. This is the fine thread pitch while the every-other-6mm-bolt-on-the-bike thread is 6x1, finding 6x0.75 screws is not too easy. Any round or pan head screw would seal OK with a gasket or O-ring, naturally you wouldn't get the dribble function unless you did some fancy drilling.
Best to try a wrecker I think.
