Ya know, I've been here for a little over 5yrs now and thought that the SOHC4 was a pretty good size group, but somewhere along the way, the "specs" kinda went into "OverDrive"!!

Just for the heck of it, I went and looked at the membership specs and how many Post.

I was taken back by just how big the SOHC4 was!!

Total Members: 12613
Total Posts: 821977

All I can say is, That's a lot of SOHC4 Minded folks AND activity!

Yeah its a lot of gabbing for sure. Bill I've tried to reply to your PM but the mailer has a headache with the new industrial names. I tried both the REPLY and original PM functions.

Oops! Sorry if I've caused some foul ups there Mike. I've run the "Industrial" thing for a bit to show support to Industrial Cafe and I think I'm going back to my initial username now.

A lot of members come and go Billy and a lot of posts get deleted, the total post count goes down as posts are deleted but the membership numbers don't.
A new member who joined yesterday has the membership number of 21,174.

I've noticed there's a lot of long time members that have very low post counts, i.e. 3 or 4 posts and then no contact for 4 years or more. This would suggest people have in the past become members to ask a couple of questions then never come back again. Wonder if it's worth suggesting to the mods that they go thru the members list and anone who hasn't posted for 2 years or more is scratched off the membership list.

That is what happens Rob but not very often, thats the reason one of the last members has a membership number of 21,174 yet we only have 12,613 members.
Glenn has a clean out every now and then which adds to the members who close their accounts themself.

Sam, I knew there were a number of members who had left and that Glenn takes care of things very well too, but I sure didn't realize that the difference in the count was THAT much! Maybe, IF it weren't for Spammers and such, it might be nice to have a gesture of a few "free" questions without having to join. Might be more folks who'd like what they see and join up (who might not join at all, because they couldn't tell how good this place is) But we'll never know, because of all the trash that would take advantage of a situation like that.

Oh well, just ME thinking out loud. $:-\$

Every couple of months, I go through the member list and delete the accounts that haven't been used for at least 6 months and have zero posts. I also delete accounts that haven't been used for a year or more that have fewer than 10 posts figuring they were just transient visitors.

If it was possible with a future version of this software, I wouldn't mind seeing something where people were reminded every month (or maybe only twice a year) that they have an account here. The message would include a link to the site and a link to a place where they could delete their account. I see this with many of the mailing lists I'm subscribed to and it often gets me to check the messages I've been receiving from that list, but filtering out of my in box.

This might serve to bring some inactive members back - for a bit anyway.

that happened to me when I got my first 550. I was gone a while when I returned I could not remember my login info, tried all my standards with no luck so I made a new one. I deleted one awhile back, came back and made another. I'M SORRY IT'S ALL MY FAULT

Hi Glenn, while you're on, a couple of Questions.
I got several report post emails from 2 members about spammers.
When I clicked the link, it told me I didn't have the authorisation to enter it.
The other thing was that I received them like I receive notification of PMs, several days late, what's going on.

This database is updated by users (like us) and checks every new registrant against the database of reported spammers. Username, email and IP address.

We reject these registrations but they have already taken a user number. Hence, every rejected spammer increases the number of registrants.

That's like 2 to 3500 false registrations per YEAR! So there's really only about 10 valid registered users?

No. We only started using it in the last 6 months when the level of spammers started to get unmanageable.

Unfortunately, it is well documented that posting spam on forums works. Some forums are little used and spam builds up very quickly. Every link that is counted by Google pushes their Viagra shop up the list.

On the old gallery, we completely missed a spammer for several months who had posted 65 PAGES of links into the comment fields of one of the albums. Glenn had to delete them from the database as it would have taken Bob and me months to delete them all manually!

I'll take this post as an occasion to ask for assistance. If everyone would post in the correct forum it would help a great deal. It saves our having to move them. We are just trying to keep things organized. One of the perennial problem areas is the Tips & Tricks. Folks routinely post technical questions there is suspect "looking for a tip or trick" to solve their problem. That's not what that area is for. It is to collect proven tips and tricks and make easier for others to find them.
