GL1000 wheels on a CB500?
« on: March 28, 2006, 05:54:59 PM »
Has anyone experimented with putting wheels from a shaft drive bike like the Goldwing on a CB?  I have a nice set of Comstars that would look sweet on my CB.  I reaalize there'd be some work to do: connecting the drive splines on the rear hub to a sprocket, etc.

thanks,
doug

If you can get the centre piece from the rear bevel box its a reasonably straight forward conversion.
I havnt done it but I have seen it done by a friend of mine on a 750 sohc Chopper. I'll make some enqiries

Thanks in advance.  I have the bevel assembly, so the center part is no problem.  I would appreciate any information you can share.  I'll have to figure a way to mount a rear caliper and master cylinder as well (perhaps a GL/CX 500 wheel - with drum brake - would be a better choice, but since I have the GL wheels that's what I'd like to use).

For the front: presuming the caliper mount doesn't line up (either with the GL or CB caliper), should I look at swapping forks?

Again, I appreciate the help.

An easier swap would be to use comstars from a CB650 Custom with a drum brake.

If its too easy its no 'fun'.
650 wheels would probably be best way to go but it would require an extra outlay. If youy already have a set of wheels use them, (why I have Suzuki Katana wheels on a 650 Yam twin :D) if you dont like the results can always look around for 650 wheels.

That's what I was thinking - 650 wheels are easier, but since I already have the GL wheels start w/them.  I probably have enough caliper parts to make a rear caliper work.

Any thoughts on swapping forks or fork lowers?

You may have a minor problem with damper rods/hydraulic lock stop. As long as fork tubes are same diameter its no big deal.
I'll see if I can get some pics of wheels, may take a couple of days

Too cool - thanks!  If I can get away w/it I'd like to use the stock CB tubes, mostly because I don't have a set of GL tubes  ,-)  But I see them on eBay often and they usually goi cheap.

On the rear: I'm assuming I'll take the drive spline bits from the GL bevel drive and drill (or otherwise graft on) mounts for the CB sprocket, filling any left over space w/a spacer.  For the caliper I could try and go the HD route (mount the caliper to the swingarm) or see if the GL caliper mount (aluminum bracket that mounts to the axle) will work.

Sounds like FUN!!

Nomath-  It might do you some good to measure your GL front wheel and compare to your CB500s front.  You may find that the GL wheel with rotors mounted is wider than the available space between the stock 500s forks.  The GLs use a wider fork spacing and thicker diameter forks so you wouldn't be able to slide in a set of GLforks into your triple trees nor would you be able to put GL lowers on your 500 tubes.  You probably could fit the entire GL front end including trees into the stock 500 head tube (The spoked GL1000 front end fits, but I am not certain about the later comstar GLS)The F2/F3 750s used comstars with dual discs up front and a single disc in the rear, so perhaps some parts from these bikes might help you with your swap. Overall, using the F2/f3 wheels, forks, calipers, rotors and swingarm would certainly be a much more straight forward option to putting comstars on your bike and upgrading the brakes. . . . . . . .

On the subject of the CB650 Comstars, I know I read somewhere (on this site) about what
rotor to use on the front wheel (I'm a 77' CB550K w/ them on it). I'm thinking the rotor should
come from a CB250N (i that right?) My concern is that the rotor is mighty close to the fork leg. It
seems to bolt up okay, but that rotor is so close. The CB650 sticks out some. Anybody got any
ideas or input? I've got plenty of time. I'm just trying to piece together what I want to use on it
and how I'm going to build it. Later on, Bill
