I'm live just outside Maryborough and it is amazing the amount of people (southerners mainly) that are amazed that the water can come so high, and we have only copped a small flood, so far, 8.4 metres I think was the peak (our highest ever recorded was about 12.5m) but there is more to come it hasn't rained here much in the last day or so but upstream from us, at Gympie, the water is still rising and they are expecting a peak of 20 metres or more there, so it will be an interesting next couple of days. I personally hope the flood doesn't hang around too long as I am starting a new job at the end of next week on Lady Elliot Island and atm there is water in between me and the airport. :-\

Lucky bugger, what is the job on Lady Elliot..?, i have land just outside 1770, beautiful part of the world.....Pack your fishing gear.... ;)
Are you all good with the water situation....?

Mick
We are fine as far as the floods go, our place is about 45 metres above the river, if we go under Maryborough will be long gone.  Mind you I am sick of the rain, our driveway is that chopped up and soupified that anything less than a 4x4 won't get near the place, in december we had 27" of rain and at least another 10" this year so far, and to think our total rainfall for 2009 was only 15". I am sick of shoveling rock into the driveway. I will be working in the maintenance department doing mechanicing and general maintenance around the resort.  I visited Lady Elliot a few years ago and it was the closest I can imagine to being in paradise on earth.  Mind you, my view of the place may change once I start working there, but I can't see it happening. As far as taking the fishing gear goes, the government has stuffed that up they put a whopping great green zone with Lady Elliot right in the middle  :-\ but I will definately be packing my snorkeling gear  ;D ;D ;D

There's going to be boats there  ;D......i would still pack the fishing gear. I have fished a lot around the bunker group and there are piles of good fish there..... ;)

Mick
I don't know if the resort still allows employees to use their boats out of hours but if they do I'll be first on board, for the first stint I wont be taking any fishing gear over but the second stint may be different ;D ;D I am looking forward to it though

Fortunately for me I've had a 3 day weekend so I haven't had to go to work. Got a call today from a friend in the estate who said she just made it through to get home this arvo.
I went down to take a look at the floodway. The worry is I might get outta here tomorrow to go to work, but will I get home again? Pics are of the entry into the estate where I live. Some people must've heard & came home early. I'm pretty sure road will be open tomorrow.
It feels like it's been raining forever, just got my 550 up & running after 6 yrs & haven't been able to score a fine day yet except for a quick run or two around locally.
But of course if that's my worst worry I'm doing ok. So many have lost everything, I can't imagine how that feels.

some of the satellite photos are insane. Its amazing that only 8 people have been lost, considering the size of the area flooded.

Just saw this video on gizmodo.

Sadly it's just been announced that the Brisbane River will peak higher than it did in 1974. Over 6,000 buildings will be under water tomorrow.

It's bloody hard to comprehend.

One thing I found interesting in any of the personal interviews I saw on the news, the Australian residents were quite stoic about it, as in these things happen, as apposed the typical Manhattan resident last week and that snow was gone in a few days.  ::)
Aussies are tough units and have that settler spirit that gets them through. it is sad they have to tap into that strength. They will get through.

Now Bob, you know New Yorkers are tough also. I was in Mid Town Manhattan on 9/13/01 and life was going on. As a former New Yorker you know we don't keep quiet when there is something to #$%* about. The people were taking the City to task for doing a crappy job, and we will #$%* about it !    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks guys, luckily we are above the flood level {as long as i doesn't rain any more}, sun is finally out but there is an enormous amount of water heading towards Brisbane. The weather has been insane and now its kind of weird as there is no wind and the sun is out.
10 dead now and nearly 100 missing. 75% of Queensland is now a disaster zone, thats over 1.5 million square kilometres  :o

My daughter has evacuated herself out of the CBD, she had to move all her flat contents up to the 3rd floor to keep them dry!
She's goning to be gutted when she returns and sees the damage. :(
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Rain has held up for the last 2 days but there is so much water going into our catchments that it will flood in some places with out rain now. We had some parts of Queensland and New South Wales that have been in drought for up to 10 years or more and with early rain this year they planted huge crops only to have them wash away......Wouldn't be a farmer for all the money in the world. There are now cyclones developing off the Queensland coast so i suspect more inundation before this wet season is over.... ???

(CNN) -- A teenager who was scared of water drowned in the Queensland floods after begging rescuers to save his younger brother first.

Jordan Rice, 13, and his mother Donna, 43, were swept away as a wall of water hit the town of Toowoomba on Monday afternoon.

His family has hailed the youngster's selfless actions.

"Jordan can't swim and is terrified of water," his father, John Tyson, told local newspaper The Toowoomba Chronicle. "But when the man went to rescue him, he said 'save my brother first.'

"I can only imagine what was going on inside to give up his life to save his brother, even though he was petrified of water. He is our little hero."

Rice was taking Jordan and his 10-year-old brother Blake to buy school uniforms when the family car became stuck in floodwaters.

As the tide rose around them, the mother-of-four made a desperate call to the emergency services, and the trio clambered on to the roof of their stranded vehicle, before passer-by Warren McErlean stopped to help.

"I called out for some ropes and a guy gave me some ropes and I tied those together and just headed out towards this car," he told the Nine Network.

"But the water just kept coming up and by the time I got near this car it just swept me off my feet.

"The mum put the boy on his back and bought him across to me and by that time I grabbed the boy and the water kept coming up... it was too much water and there was just no time. The tension took up on the rope and I had to let it go.

"He was just pleading with me to please save my mum, please save my mummy - he was screaming to save his mum.

"It's terrible. I just kept telling the boy it was going to be alright and it wasn't," a distraught McErlean explained.

"I'm just very sorry for himself and his family that we couldn't do some more and get them out."

A Facebook page set up as a tribute to Jordan has garnered more than 150,000 supporters, and has been filled with messages of sympathy and support for his father and brothers Blake, Kyle, 16, and Chris, 22.

The death toll from the Queensland floods has risen to 15, and there are fears it could grow further as the waters recede in the days to come, with some 70 people still listed as missing.

Dozens still missing as floodwaters peak in Brisbane

"We still have a number of families who don't know where their children are, who don't know where their loved ones are," said Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.

Probably would have grown to be a fine man.  :'(

The sad thing about that boy and his mum drowning is that if they had gotten out of the car they would have been saved, the water was only knee deep but it was enough to make the car slide off into the drain...Man we have had some rain and they say it will be like this for at least 3 months more.....Our wet season usually starts at the end of January.....

I'm fortunate to have this weekend off. It'll be spent shifting furniture back into the mother-in-law's house. The water stopped 3" from going above the floor, then off to my nephews to help clean up. The water came to just below the ceilings. Most of the inside walls are bulging from the mud packed in behind em. Not sure if it will be retrievable.
Thousands of others no doubt facing the same dilemma.
Then there's the infrastructure of the whole State to consider. Have a look at what the water did to the coal train rails in North Queensland.
