I don't want this to turn into a #$%* fight but we are getting prepared for more extreme weather events here, our sea temps have been slowly rising for years now and this is the result. We have been through a la nina weather pattern and now we are in a el nino, which is a normal weather event and is caused by a natural change in sea temps between us and South America, but now the temps are higher and the storms are extreme, we already had 75% of the state declared a disaster zone , now it looks like mother nature wants the rest. We are setting new records weekly at the moment......

Yeah, Retro, it's not your father's weather patterns anymore.  :P  This is the second winter now where it seems the east coast and the states to our south have been getting the worst of it. Not normal, or is it the the new normal?

Wow, its 500 Kilometres wide.....and 300+ Kilometre winds at its centre, witch is 100 kilometres wide.......She's a big one....

Well it looks like the people up North were lucky, there is a huge amount of damage shown with the limited footage coming out of the region and so far no deaths, just massive crop losses and more flooding and trashed houses.......All we need now is a tsunami and we've had it all this season.... :o

Well I think that the "Big Fella" up there needs to give you guys a break now.

The good spirit of the whole community is overwhelming and the place will be rebuilt after all of this.

Good news so far that there have not been any injuries or fatalities reported and lets pray that stays that way.

One thing that rings true after this is the old saying - Pre Warned is Pre Armed.

Where did it come ashore?  Looks like a bit south of Cairns but I have heard no reports of any town getting a direct hit.

I think Tully took it head on, pictures are just coming out now, it changed course slightly just before coming on the mainland and avoided heavily populated area's, although they were still effected.

It's going to remain a cyclone over land for about another 12 hours yet which is an idea of the intensity of this one.
Generally cyclones turn into a tropical low once they hit landfall and the central pressure increases up to and above
1000 hectoPascals.

They are expecting floods through Alice Springs/Central Aust as the low keeps moving South Westerly.

I see Innisfail got hit again too.  Good thing it did not swing north over the Gulf of Carpentaria and reform.

I heard on the radio early this morning that some of the sceptics were suggesting that. (turning and reforming over the Gulf)
These cyclones are erratic and unpredictable and I hope that it keeps going the way that it's going.
This La Nina weather pattern is going to be around for another couple of months yet and the possibility of more cyclones forming is a reality.
