replacing primary drive chain
« on: March 30, 2006, 06:26:01 AM »
I am replacing my primary drive chain tonight.  I remember in a past thread that there was talk of soaking the chain in oil before installing.
Or even putting the chain in a pan of oil and heating up oil for oil to penetrate the chain better.
I this necessary?
was I just making all this up in my head?
is there any suggestion on the putting the primary chain back on?
oh ya 74 550
thanks

whether its actually neccessary to soak a chain(especially one that is in an oil bath)i dont know.ive heard over the years its a good thing to do and even heating like you said is supposed to open the pores of the metal and let oil soak in.if you have the means why not.

I would regard the chain as any other component during reassemble of an engine. You are already liberally oiling gears, bearings, rockers, and pistons, go ahead and give the chain a dunk in some oil before install, or at the very least, squirt some oil on it while rotating it once installed. I'd prefer to dunk it myself.

A hot oil bath? These chains run in a (relatively speaking) nice environment, full time oil bath. Once that motor heats up the chain on the first start-up, I think the oil will get where it needs to go, if it hasn't already.

Wouldn't want to start a fire!
