from the pic it almost looks like it the sprocket is flush with the  end of the shaft?

That really looks like the fixing plate is still on there. Can you see the groove in the shaft where it used to fit? She's a rusty one for sure. (or is it a really grainy picture?)

Damn dude!  She sit outdoors unstarted for a bit?  That is rust Im seeing right?  Sure itll clean off fine but its probably fused that sprocket to the shaft to some extent.  You do realize the more rusted piece in the center has to be removed first, right?  Theres two tabs that line up with the splines on the output shaft which then line up with a groove just before the sprocket itself.  That center peice gets move clockwise (or counter) to line up with the bolt holes..so line those tabs back up with the splines and it should slide off allowing the sprocket to come off.  If you are past that point(didnt read the first page) then do as others suggested with heat.  Try torching it a bit, then pooring ice cold water over the problem area and that could contract the metals enough to break it loose.

I pulled copy of the picture down and cleaned it up some. The locking plate IS removed, actually. What we're seeing is sort of rust shadow where it has been in contact with the sprocket for so long, and presumably dry. I've never seen this before. Usually there is some lube around a sprocket. I'm guess that the splines are just so rusty they have a thin crust on the surface that is preventing the sprocket from sliding off. If he could move it back in some and use something to dress the spline surfaces, he might be able to get it off with the puller. Strictly stab in the dark here, never faced this in real-life.

then how close to the edge is the sprocket?  canyou see the groove where the spacer used to be?  the shaft or sprocket could be rusted together and/ or there is bits of metal hanging you up.  you need to really clean and oil that things before trying to pull pry etc.

Here's the modified version of the picture, still a bit fuzzy, but it does not appear the sprocket is flush with the end of the shaft yet.

Rust aside, that sprocket doesnt look very worn.  Strap a chain to it and run the hell out of it a few times. ;D  Torque and vibration from normal use, not to mention natural heating and cooling of the motor/sproket...plus ass loads of penetrating oil, would probably loosen it right up.  To me that just seems like the most enjoyable way of doing it! 8)

I think that sprocket IS worn.  I wouldn't want to put a new chain on it.  But, operational vibration WOULD probably help loosen the rust between splines and sprocket.

Anyone else want to chant with me?

I agree with TwoTired, you can tell that the sprocket is worn and I definitely wouldn't
want to take a chance on the chain jumping off, causing damage to the case. I'd rather swap the
      sprocket out myself.

Having just change front and rear sprockets I can tell you, she be worn, really worn.  Freakin ninja's would by that thing as a Hanzo sharpened death star.  My 2 cents.  That is some serious, serious corosion in there.  Protect you wiring and then douse the living bejesus out of it with penetrating oil.  When your done with that douse it again, then try to gently shimmy it of.  I you use a puller without this step you can, but not likely damage the drive shaft grooves.  Time, patience, grease and some new sprockets and a cahin are the order of the day. ::)

I get it, I'm a little slow sometimes :P.  I thought that somebody that uses this site so much would know better, I guess I lost the sarcasm in the writing.  Even though looking back you clearly illustrated it with the little smiley dudes.

Yes, but only 10% of readers recognize it's presence.  25% don't understand it.  25% don't find it humorous.  25% are offended by it.  25% actually laugh inwardly.   25% encourage the practice.  And, 50% have problems with math, not counting those with bipolar syndrome.

Apply penetrating oil. Wait 10 minutes. Tap it lightly with a small hammer. It will loosen right up and slide off..

thanks guys. i swear i'll remember to pay attention to it next time i'm down there. spent all afternoon preparing for my upcoming paint job, and polishing my carb tops and bottoms and blowing everything back out while i had the float bowls off, for good measure. i keep forgetting to find my puller, but rest assured i have indeed oiled, tapped, and even pryed a little bit...i wouldn't come scratching my head without having tried to do the obvious first. like i said, i initially asked the question because i thought maybe it was the kind of thing where i was trying too hard.

demistifying the picture: what you're seeing is actually the sprocket covered in paint blow-by from when i painted my engine, but with the front plate removed showing the original rusty POS. no, it is not flush with the front. there is probably 1/16"-1/8" between the sprocket and the cog-looking thing in front of it.

I can't help with the sprocket removal, but my first thought when I looked at the picture was: 'what the hell disintigrated and coated everything with metal flake???'  Glad to see it was just paint.

Dude......You will rarely get this advice here, but I think sometimes, $60.00 spent at the Honda dealership is a good investment.
It allows you to meet the local dealers mechanics, "they really do want to help". And you just might learn what the problem was for future reference.  You just may find a mechanic at the shop who loves these old bikes and will continue to be a wealth of information to you. "I did". I call him when I really get stuck and he takes my call, and yes I take my bike in for #$%* I have no idea about.

Pick your battles....don't you want to ride that thing?

Sorry if I have broken the "I have to do every thing myself rule".

Ride it man.

I wondered what all the spots were about. Mr. Adobe had to work hard to tone them down.  ;D

Hope you find that puller. I'm anxious to see if that does the trick.
