What bike do you regret selling the most?
« on: March 23, 2006, 09:08:57 AM »
Seems like most of us here have ridden a while and have owned lots of bikes. I'll bet most everybody's had one they've gotten rid of for one reason or another and have always regreted. Mines a '98 Ducati ST2. I bought new in the fall of '98. Damn, I loved the thing. Handled like a dream, looked cool, pretty comfy, and the sound of a desmo V-Twin through C/F pipes at 9k is fantastic. It kind of sucked two-up though. I traded it for my BMW to keep my wife riding with me. My idea, not hers, so I can't pass the blame on this one. The #$%*s of it is, her back got bad enough a year or so later that she hardly ever rides anyway. Every time I think about that bike I wish I had it back. Maybe someday I'll buy another one.

My first 500/4 in 1980 (shown on the left)

Got peanuts for it against a 550K3 - if I still had it it surely would attract attention (and I could keep it next to my '72 stocker)

My '72 Kawasaki 175, mostly because it was my first. Got it in middle school and rode it for several years (it was almost new then). Sold it because some friends of mine were killed on a bike when they hit a train at a blind crossing. Took me a long time to ride again. The Kaw was basically a dual sport so I had the best of both worlds. Took it places it shouldn't have gone!

My 87 BMW K75.  I was transferring to the home base of my company, which is in Indianapolis, and I figured the BMW was an easy mark in the city.  Turns out the parking lot was well protected in the middle of the plant and the bike would have been very safe :o  Instead of buying another BMW, I went out and bought a new $3995 Sportster.  Talk about one dumb move after another.  But in all fairness the Sporty was a fine choice for a solo commuter.  I still miss that BMW though.

The only bike I have ever sold- my '76 CB550k. The thing was tired, loose and leaky when I got it (40000mi), I rode it for the summer of '98 and sold it right before college.  Now, i know I can get another 550 all day long, but that one was special to me. As soon as my 400F is finished, I may be in the market for another one...

...minus, of course, the gawd awful windjammer my old one had...

I had an '87 GSX-R1100 I bought new.  I can't say I regret selling it since I've got too much stuff.  But I still miss having it around.  It was always good for a giggle.

2001 Yamaha R6.  Just awsomely fast.  I had Akropovic Ti slip on and Yamaha solo seat.  I miss that bike more than anything.  Truely great.  Did I say fast.  :)

My 66' CB72 Hawk, When I got through with it, it would give the 305 Super Hawks fits
and stay a little ways behind the CB450s. It looked good (Painted it metallic blue, CB350
headlight and gauges, Chromed side covers, moved the footrest back to the passenger position,
set up the shifter to reverse the shift pattern, custom racing style seat and megaphones with
some engine work too). My next one would be my SL350. Good running bike. Later on. Bill

My original, bought brand new K2 750, then I raced it, abused, it, crashed it, loved it (not necessarily in that order) - traded it in on a Fiat !!!! What was I thinking?
Then had a series of other Hondas, 1100F was one of the best, all of which I wish I still had of course, but now back to where it all started - 33 years later another K2 750. This time there'll be NO trade on a Fiat - and that's a promise! ;D

I honestly regret every bike I ever sold with the exception of two: my first ever motorcycle was a European model 250 Suzuki, some kind of cruiser. Ugliest piece of @#$! I ever laid eyes on, and had the delightful habit of stopping dead -- instantly, no warning -- every half hour or so. Which is the perfect introduction to my subsequent experiences with Suzuki in general, but that's another story.

The second was a '97 Ducati 748. Absolutely gorgeous on the sidestand. An absolute pain in the backside in every other situation.

My biggest regret, though, isn't a bike I sold at all. It was my '78 CB750F that ran beautifully with essentially zero maintenance. When I traded up to my first modern bike about 15 years ago, I simply abandoned the old Honda in an underground parking garage. Left the key in it and walked away.

 :o ???  :'(
