Piston Pitted & other rebuild questions
« on: January 07, 2011, 09:11:27 am »
tearing down a spare cylinder and top end to install in my CB500 this spring.

To my questions:

The pistons I took out have a fair amount of pitting on top. When is this a problem and the piston should be replaced.

Also, as mentioned above I am tearing into a spare motor with the intention of rebuilding the cylinder core and top end, then swap this stuff into my existing. Is this a reasonable approach or is there merit in keeping the cylinders and top end orginal to the bike motor?

thanks

You should probably show some pix of the pitting. This comes from moisture that mixed with old carbon and leftover fuel, etching the piston tops as they sat for year and years. If the pitting is too deep, the carbon will build up when running until it causes pinging problems. Sometimes the pitting can be sanded off with no ill effects.
