Head won't come all the way off!?
« on: January 07, 2011, 09:16:15 AM »
So I finally knocked a pin out of my cam chain after a couple weeks of trying to get the pistons freed up to be able to get to the bottom cam chain bolt to no avail. I get all of the nuts and bolts out needed to remove the head and it starts to come right off with a little tug BUT....it will only go up about 1/4" before it gets stuck. I cant figure out for the life of me why it won't come all the way off...tapped on it a bit with a rubber mallet and even tried prying it up a little with a rubber coated tool but it started to bend a fin so I stopped and ran here. THANKS for any and all advice.

Is this a 750? You sure there isn't a nut you may have missed on one of the head studs that's hanging on by a few threads? Did you remove the cam and cam towers and get the bolts under the rubber discs? Pics would help :D

its a 500 and yes ive checked 4 times in my own manual and the one on line and closely looked over it and all nuts and bolts are completely removed and in a jar. Cam is out and all of the rubber discs were removed and bolts under them removed as well.

What Scunny said, you may have to push it back out of the way with a very long handled flat screwdriver.
Can't think of anything else that would hold you back??????
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

nothings very rusted and it just seems like its getting to the top of the bolts free of the pins and everything but not wanting to pull past where the threads are. cam chain tensioner nut is removed and tried moving it back as far out of the way as I could get it but still nothing.

If you are sure that all the bolts and nuts are removed from the head (some bikes have a small locating bolt at very front or back of head that attaches head to barrels, not sure about the 500).
Being me (part caveman) I'd use small wooden wedges spaced around under the head and tap them in sequence to raise the head right off but that's just me. ;D
You don't say if the engine is still in the frame or what sort of damage you are trying to repair, could a piston crown that had disconnected from it's piston be locked onto the head or tied up with the valves, nasty thought I know but seen it on other bikes.

My only other thought is, if washers are used under the head studs, have you removed all of them, if they go sideways slightly they will lock up like anything.

It could be the threaded end of the rods catching in the head gaskit.
I would drop it back down and lift it again fast - if it makes a sudden thud, then there is a fastener holding somewhere.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Fingers under fins on either side of the head, and lift it straight up in one clean swift move. ;)

I'm a big fan of wood as you will have noted. ;D
I have unsiezed many bikes big and small with a nicely rounded piece of timber and a tapping hammer, not quite PC but they usually finally free up once the seal is broken (try not to break the pistons as you may need them again). :D
