My '79 cb650 project
« on: October 13, 2012, 10:48:24 AM »
Well, Hello all,

I am thinking of overhauling my '79 this winter with pieces I have been collecting over the years.

My '79 650 currently has a few mods I have added through the years.
MANY of them inspired by what I have read here at SOHC4.

61mm pistons,
powdercoated frame
oil cooler
new shocks(rear)
Air assisted setup off a '82 cb650 on the front forks
Dual disk drilled rotor setup for the front tire
'81 swingarm with custom bushings(82? I forget)
31mm CV carbs(600cc ninja)
a fairing(vetter)
and strangely enough a 550 cam(had to try and see if it would really run with one in preperation/hopes of getting a 550 race cam in there one day).

I was origionally going to put my spare bits n pieces on the other 650 I have.....But $$ is tight, christmas coming etc.... Going to sell the other 650.(I currently have 2 '79 cb650's)

The spare bits - n - pieces I am going to play with this winter include:
62mm pistons, rings, bored/honed cylinders(was told the pistons are 10.75:1 CR :) )
4-1 exhaust
mini turn signals
stock 650 cam
I might even ditch the fairing and go with a dual headlamp configuration up front.
'82 650 swingarm modified for the 16" rear tire with a disk brake.
I like a fairing some days, and hate it others.

Not sure what I am going to end up doing, I really want to get a CV 650 head to better match the carb spacing of these CV's I am using. I might not put the 62mm pistons in yet though. The 61mm overbore I am currently running is fantastic still IMO.(ie not smoking)
I would like to ditch the rear foot pegs, and do a custom sea for solo riding.

If I can figure out uploading pics, I will add what I can.

A 650 , nice. kind of an oddity but getting more popular it seems. Pics we like pics, the easiest way  is photo bucket, easy to deal with, automatically sizes.
I have a 80 650, I like the way it feels, rides smooth, will smoke my 550's, but it has a more modern look that reminds me more of a Yamaha, instead of the classic profile of the 500/550 that I grew up with. I'm looking forward to see what you might do and what you've done so far.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.
