76 honda xl175
« on: January 09, 2011, 09:37:41 AM »
anyone know where to get a motor for one of these?  I understand that anything from like 74 to 78 will fit...even possibly an xl185 motor.  thanks

I guess these engines had an issue with the kickstarter shaft breaking, I did a little reading when this thread came along: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=79544.0 and it seems those motors are getting pretty rare. Is your bike in nice enough shape to find the right motor? Making a 185 (or something else) fit may be easer to get done, even considering it may require some frame mods.

well, I have the whole bike minus the engine,, exhaust, carb.   Tank needs thorough acid dip tho...but it will clean up.  Sidecovers cleaned up nice with turle wax polish.  seat in good shape.  rims in decent shap, guages, lights etc good shape.  Bike was left sitting beside garage at a rental when the peeps moved out, Brother in law brought it to me.  Would be nice to have a motor in it to ride it.

Pick up a cheap chinese Lifan motor for it.  They're a bolt-in swap and you'll have 200cc, electric start and 12-volt lighting!  And, as long as you don't make it live it's life at redline, it'll do just fine.  Nearly every motor part is available from Lifan online.

Good luck with it.
