First build in a long time....... 74 750 Cafe New pics!
« on: January 10, 2011, 04:58:47 PM »
Well,  I said in the new introductions I would post some info on my build so here it goes.

Bike is a 2 owner 74 750 with a few miles on the clock but a freshened up engine before the first owner passed away. The bike was very well taken care of until the last 2 or 3 years it was ridden in which it fell in disrepair then the bike was put in storage for a while.

My plans are the standard Cafe bike stuff. Complete tear down and inspection, replace all seals, rework front brakes, paint and bodywork and polish, polish, polish.  Quite a bit of the stuff is done already as I had a few days off around Christmas.

So far I have fabbed the new tach and mini speedo bracket. Starting at the front I rebuilt the front forks and polished the lowers, fixing some slight tube imperfections that could have been a detrement to the seals. Rebuilt the front caliper, stripped the paint and polished it. The front wheel is not done yet but will be next, I am painting instead of powder coating this time around.

The top triple tree has been polished, the gauge mount has been made from alumnium and polished. The front end bearings were like new when I took it apart so they will only require some fresh grease upon reassembly. New gaters have been purchased as well as after market headlight ears. The front fender has been cut a little for a better look.

The handlebar switches were taken apart and polished and then reinstalled on the new clubman bars with the wires inside the bars  (man that was a #$%*).  I did learn that one of the best things to put thru the bars to use as a pulling device is weed-eater line that is fresh off the big roll. It has a natural bend in it and just pushed right thru!  Then the front master cylinder was polished.

Next came the tear down for the frame to be painted. Engine removal by laying the stripped frame on it's side. Thanks for that idea it worked great. I remember when I was younger and in the motorcycle business I could just sit on the
frame and grab the motor and yank it out, I did it several times a week. Damn time sure makes you weaker. LOL
Frame has been sprayed with a good automotive silver metalflake and will be coated with Spraymax 2K.  The engine will be reinstalled after a quick look-see inside, a fresh coat of paint and some polished covers.

The Mac turnout exhaust have been reworked into a 4 into 2 which will be painted black, then the mufflers have been cut down to about 6 inches in length and the chrome has been scuffed to look like brushed stainless and then it will be clear coated. I cut down the baffles to fit the new muffler length, it may be too loud when done so if it is I will get a 4 into 1 for it. The scuffed clear coated mufflers look neat, I did the same thing on my dialy rider KZ 750 with a 4 into 1 on it.

The rear wheel has been disassembled, polished and the rest painted, I don't know how the paint will hold up but if it doesn't I will go with powder coating.  I am planning on running some shocks I picked up off a GS 1100 Suzuki, that will just require some rebushing.

I still have to work on the tank and side covers and paint them, as well as get the Carpy roadrace seat in which has been ordered and make the cover. I am thinking of 2 inch marine seat foam with a standard black cover made of marine vinyl. I picked up a trick little led taillight/turnsignal combination off ebay for the rear and the front I will have to get some small turn signals.

I have a few pictures of the bike I will try to post and I will try to take more as time goes along, but I am real bad about pictures.

You will see the bike is an outdoor/driveway project as the garage is full. I guess it's a good thing I live in Florida.

This was the starting point. If the picture works???

The polished stuff still needs it's color buff but that will be just before final assembly.
The wheels are done in a hammered black finish and haven't been clear coated yet and the frame and swingarm are metallic silver but haven't been clear coated yet.  Just waiting on it to warm up a few degrees.

And finally my last toy.
460, c6, lockers and 456 gears, frame off a couple of years ago but no body work yet, not in bad shape but could be better. And this is why I ride my bike daily it gets just a little better mileage. ;)

Well things are shaping up. Been short on time lately but got a little more done. Seat came in quicker than expected so I got to get it mounted today, also made a tray for the electronics.
Tires are on their way and should be here middle of the week, so I get to put the engine back in next weekend hopefully.Got about half the engine covers polished but the valve cover is gonna take some time, it looks to be in pretty cruddy shape with a few pits and stuff. Trying to decide on engine paint, leaning towards black wrinkle then polishing the fin tips. Any thoughts on this??? Used that black wrinkle PJ1 all the time years ago.
Took the top end apart on the engine and just as expected it had been freshened up not long ago back to stock, all still looks good.

Body work on the tank and side covers took longer than I had hoped but I think I got them just right. Hopefully we'll have some warm dry weather later in the week so I can get them sprayed.

Just got one pic to post as I am not good about documenting on film. :-[  I'll try to get some more when it starts going together.

Been a while since I posted. I've not done a good job  taking pictures along the way  but thought  I'd show where I am now with the build. Part of the cost of the next build will include a new  camera, right now I'm down to using the camera part of the video camera, I'm pretty sure I'd be in the dog house for quite a while if it got dirty, greasy or broken like it probably would.  Well the bike is a roller again and the motor has been installed. I'm not sure if I am going to stick with the blue paint (it still has to be cleared) or if I am going with something else, thingking maybe White???? what do ya'll think.   The spray hammer finish on the wheels did quite well when mounting the tires but the best part about it is if you have to do touch ups you can't hardly tell where you touched up!
I thought I'd pass along an idea that I had that came out very, very good. The forks were not in too good shape where the factory headlight ears were and I did not want to run them I wanted to run aftermarket ones, so after doing a little measuring I made my way to the big orange box store and bought some chrome p-trap extension tubes, carefully measured the length, found my large tubing cutter that was buried in the bottom of tool box #2, chopped them off, and voila chrome covers. The new headlight ears required longer screws since the fork diameter increased but it looks way better than before.

Here's the pics

Looking Good!  I like the blue with the silver frame.......NOT WHITE!  I have also used the plumbing pipe to cover the forks and use polished alloy ears. Nice black kill button and I like the clocks and mount!  I'd save the time and work on the 4-2 and go directly to a 4-1 exhaust......black chrome!  I like the black motor paint with polished edges on the fins but only on barrel. Its your bike.........keep it going.

Just wanted to post a sneak preview pic. The weather is warming up  and baseball season is here in St. Pete so kinda busy right now, still got a few things to iron out but maybe after this weekend she'll be ready. Got one big project left but I'm gonna do it first and ask for input if I should keep it or not.

Not the best pic but all I had was  an old cell phone to snap it on that day.

All Done!   ;D
Went for a ride last night and ended up at Bike  Night at Biff Burger here in St. Pete.  Had to stuff a trophy down my shirt for the ride home :D

Got a few pics to show.

The first ones are of my work area, not exactly what I'd like to be working in but it'll do. The table (workbench) was made from an old scrap of plywood and some folding buffet table legs. It served as my tire changer (note the hole in the middle for the axle to go thru.) It actually worked very well, I used an old plastic soda bottles to protect the rim paint. Actually on the second tire I used the innertube to protect the rim paint, My neighbor decided to help with the second tire and somehow???? the tube got pinched. LOL The table also served as part of my outdoor paint booth as well as my carb building bench etc, etc, etc.   I made the sawhorse looking thing out of wood scraps to hold my tank while I did the body work and paint. This was my first experience with painting and I must say the Spraymax 2K clear is an amazing product. I used Rustoleum metallic blue for the body and let it dry for 3 weeks before I sprayed the clear at some advice of a young counter man at the paint store. The judge at the bike night said it was some of the best paint there last night, then I told him it was spray bombed. The "clamshell" sides for the tank were of #9 mirrored stainless. I wasn't sure how they'd come out but they are pretty good and I'm probably not gonna run into many more 750's with them in my neighborhood. Let me know what ya'll think about them. Already thinking about the next one, don't know what it will be but damn I sure missed working on these things for the past 20years.

Thanks A-J

Well I decided to put this one up for sale a few days ago and now it's gone.  :( The funny thing is I picked up another 750 K4 last night and was cleaning the carbs and checking it out when the guy came  by to pick up the blue one. He "ordered" another. I was planning on possibly just doing a restore on the one I have in the garage now but if he want's to keep my monetary flow going for a while longer I'll just pluck the good "restore parts" off this one and box em up till a later date or put em up for sale.    ???
