Easy Rust Removal
« on: January 10, 2011, 06:10:15 pm »
I have been reading many different ways to remove rust and there is no 'wrong' way. I just found this way to be easy, cheap, and very effective.

What you need:
baking soda & lemon juice

plastic container & spoon

Optional items:
Coke
000 steel wool
WD40
Buffing wheel

These are the items I cleaned:

Mix the baking soda and lemon juice together in the plastic container. Mix slowly as it will fiz and bubble quickly. It should be the consistancy of a slightly melted milkshake.

Make enough mixture to completely cover items you are cleaning. Submurge the items and let sit for 24 hours.

You will know it's ready when it looks like this:

Remove and rinse items:

An optional step is to soak the items in coke for a few hours to loosen any gunk or grime that will not be removed with the baking soda/lemon juice.

Remove items, spray with WD40, and scrub with steel wool. Then spend few minutes on a buffing wheel and you are good to go.

Now you are ready use as it or paint/power coat.

I've been cleaning more stuff and nailed down the right mix.

It's a 2:1 (baking soda/lemon juice) ratio.

1 cup of baking soda to 1/2 cup of lemon juice is the perfect amount for cleaning misc nuts, bolts, and other small items.

I plan on making a large tub big enough to put the ends of an exhaust set I have.

I have just been using Evaporust that you can pick up just about anywhere. Works great on everything including tanks. If you use it in a gas tank when you are finished just use some Heet to absorb all the left over water and you are good to go..
Cafe Racing is mainly a matter of taste. It is an atavistic mentality, a peculiar mix of low style, high speed, pure dumbness, and overweening commitment to the Cafe Life and all its dangerous pleasures. I am a Cafe Racer myself, on some days - and it is one of my finest addictions. ~H. S. Thompson~

I know this thread is ancient, but it's in the How To, so...sue me.  :P

Just nuked my header flanges in this mixture.  Should have taken a before and after picture.  When i pulled out the flanges after a 48 hour soak the mixture was dark brown. After a quick wipe down on a old shirt turned shop rag, they are seriously flawless.
