21 inch rim
« on: September 24, 2009, 03:44:34 PM »
I've been looking at the Harley version of this sight (jockey Journal) and I see a lot of guys running a 21 inch rim and I think they look amazing.

I was wondering if there is any way to fit one to our bikes?

Get a 40 hole rim, spokes from Buchanans, and have at it...

Industrial Cafe had a huge thread about this a while back.  You might get some good information out of it.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I have seen a 21 inch rim laced to a 78 Honda cb750 front hub. I have the rim and the hub but can't find spokes that won't cost an arm and a leg. Any luck on your end?
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

I have a K0 front hub laced to a 21" wheel right now... Can't decide what to do to it. I originally bought it as a 21" wheel for a CB450 but the previous owner/seller had misidentified it. SO now I have a hub with the early K0 bearing cover and a crazy ass wheel attached to it.

What are you dong there? Ryan doesn't allow "Jap" bikes anymore. Has it changed since Dragon passed?

Getting new wheels built is fairly straight forward, but thing I notice is that as the rims get bigger the overall tire height doesn't necessarily seem to keep up. Said differently, a number of 21" tires have about the same outside diameter/overall height as say a 19" rim and tire.

Case in point I have a 21" narrow glide front Harley wheel here with a stock Dunlop tire. On my cb750 I have a 19" rim with a Dunlop K70 tire. Side by side there is about 1/2"-3/4" of height difference.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

I do not know if this will have any effect on your decision or not, but its worth mentioning none the less.

I have a light-weight full-sized Harley, a Deuce.  It came with a spoked 21" wheel stock.  Today it has a forged steel 21" wheel on it by RC Components and the reason I put it on there was because in normal riding I managed to destroy two of the spoked rims in the course of about 14 months.  Both were bent beyond repair by road hazards - a pot-hole in one case and raised tracks at a rail-road crossing in the second.  I hit them at normal speeds and bent the wheels in one horrible jolt.

They ain't as strong as you might imagine.  One good thing though, they don't cost much to replace.  E-bay if full of the wheels, and you can buy a used one there just for the rim a lot cheaper than you can buy just a rim from the aftermarket folks.

By the way, I took the two bent wheels and used them to make a very nice garden cart that we pull around with the old garden tractor.  Harley uses 3/4" axles on bikes before 2007 (I think it was) so I just bought long bolts to use as axles, works great.

A newer Harley Sportster 40 hole/single disc rim, will bolt right up to any CB500/550/750 front hub......spokes and all.

Few years ago I did it to my CB500/4. Found a like new wheel on craigslist for $65. Hub of the sportster and the CB disc hub are almost the same size. Removed the spokes and rim.......and installed onto the CB500 hub....no problems. Ran it for seveal years and about 5k miles....great imporvement from the 19" rim.

16" 40 hole rim on back.......21" 40 hole rim on the front

Awesome look. The polished tank is very cool. What is the width of the 21"? I have a 1.60, 1.85, and a 2.15 that I'm debating on mounting. Anybody have a picture of a bike with a 21" front wheel with any of these variances so I can eyeball the differences?

So both the spokes and rim fit to the CB hub?

I also have a 21" front but that's how the PO set it up.  I'm pretty sure the hub is a F model, not sure on the rim itself.  I personally don't like it and would trade with someone for a 17 or 18".  I like the front bigger rubber setup.
