Anyone have problems with fitment of emgo ignition switches?
« on: January 10, 2011, 07:55:16 PM »
The emgo switches I'm looking at on ebay appear thicker than originals.  Is anyone using one in the stock ignition switch housing on a 550, 350, or similar bike with the housing under the tank?

I bought an EMGO for my '77 550F when the orig, OEM sw was "suspect". It mounted and plugged in exactly like the orig sw - no problem.

FWIW  'Can't find much good about EMGO ign sw's on this Forum (some good but not much). Evidently, they don't last long [?]. I haven't been into this EMGO but the contacts are said to be much smaller than in the OEM sw(which are quite husky). Some have reported the EMGO's have come apart unexpectedly.

So, I have redone the orig OEM sw (no wear or heat damage - just dried grease and corroded contacts in the plug-in connector). I'll put it back on before riding weather returns.

As it turned out, my problems were not caused by the orig OEM sw anyway. **Rather, it was because all elec connections and fuse clips needed to be cleaned - a common problem on these ol' bikes - as I learned from the great fellows on here. What would we do without them??!!

Keep the original ignition switch or rebuild it if you can, the Taiwanese replacements are wimpy and poorly constructed compared to the OEM switches on these bikes (750's that is).
The biggest bike those switches are made for are 550's.

no problem with fitment, just reliability-had to cable tie it together so it would not fall apart.  Still working though...Larry

I had an EMGO replacement on my 550 when I bought it...can't say how long it lasted, because I don't know how long it had already been on the bike for, but I replaced it after a couple months of riding...before getting my replacement, I stole the OEM ignition switch off of my wife's 400f, and there was no different in fitment at all.

I actually have the original ignition switch, but the salvage place I got the bike from cut the wires.  So I guess I can use it until it breaks and then just cut and splice the wiring onto my old switch.  I would still need a key though but I think the 4 number code is on the switch.

I think I read that HondaMan makes a bypass solenoid to take the headlight load off the SW. Don't know if it pertains to your bike.I read about it in his book but I think it is on this site under Thoughts of HondaMan maybe under tips&tricks

Putting a relay on the lights and /or ignition circuits is a good way to take some load off the key switch contacts . Especially if you run coils less than 5 ohms . When I got my 750 K1 the PO included a Emgo ignition switch with it to replace the broken original . It felt crappy right out of the box when I turned the key . It was dead within 2 weeks ( contacts damaged by heat ). I replaced it with OEM . Maybe Emgo quality is better now . You can buy 2 for the price of the Honda set .
