Horn On only
« on: January 13, 2011, 04:15:35 PM »
1978 750K Bike

After my build I tried to relocate my horn from the stock location. At first I didn't get any sound, so bought a new compact horn from Z1.  Simple 2 connection horn, similar to the stock unit.

I have the 2 wires, one light green and one black ready to go.  Hook them up to the horn, turn the key and it sounds.  I looked at the horn button, the green wire is attached to the spring and it seems to be funtioning correctly.

I attached the black wire, and ran a jumper ground wire and the horn sounds as soon as I ground it.

I do have a 76 style key ignition switch from partsnmore instead of the stock unit if that matters.

I assume when the horn button is pushed it connects the ground, hence sound.  So it would seem that I have the lead from the horn grounded somewhere??
I have a squirrels nest of wires inside the headlight bucket, is it possible that I connected the green wire from the horn to a constant ground instead of an interuption ground to the switch?  Does the wire from the horn split inside the headlight bucket and then to the switch?  If so, I probably hooked into a constant ground, but just wanted to ask before I tore into the mess of wires, and unwrap the loom.

Thanks in advance.

I can't say for sure as my 750 is a '74.  But yes, there should be a wire connector inside the bucket that will carry the green wire to the horn button which, as you mentioned, will ground the green wire when pushed.

The black should be key'd hot (hot when the key is on) thus the horn will shound when the green wire makes ground.

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Pull up a wiring diagram for your bike.  Solid green is a constant ground, solid black is a keyed hot.  If you hook them both up, the horn will be on whenever the key is on.

I have the black to "keyed" power, since the horn does no sound if key is not on.

It would appear that I have the green grounded somewhere, probably from the main harness to somewhere inside the bucket as a constant ground.  The green from the harness must connect to the green from the horn button, to the button for function, and then back to a ground. The button is the "closer in the ground" when pushed.  I figure I have the green from the main harness to a constant ground inside the bucket.

I have the wiring diagram, but still wasn't sure.
I will tear into the bucket and loom.

I have 3 wires at the horn connection.... one black (keyed power) one light green (wire to horn button) and one dark green (ground)  I did the same thing when putting my bike back together.  Double check the the color of the green.  Mine looks like a sun faded green.

Good to know, I think I will end up stripping down the harness.  When I built the bike back up, I stripped down all the old factory tape and redid it fresh.  However, I did have the two wires to the horn labeled "horn" and they are both the same length.  Hate to dive into the wires again, but I think I may have to at this point.

Horn Works now correctly!

I found that I had the darker green ground wire running to where I thought the horn ground was supposed to be.  That green was a constant ground, the one that seems to be an extra ground going to nowhere.  Found the light green that is the horn and hooked it up.  Works as it should.
Thanks for the imput all!
